Cartridge won't chamber in rifle

Hey All,

Looking for any additional information i can find. My nephew ownes a 7 RUM chambered 700 REM Sendero that shoots reloads great. He brought gun over with a stuck round in chamber, we had to drive it out with hammer! Went to chamber another round and it wouldn't come close to chambering. I asked him how hard it was to get the round to chamber and he said tight but not bad! (not sure he's being completly honest. I tried a new piece of brass with same results. I checked the brass dementionally and it is in spec. I believe at some point he had a partial case seperation at or near the neck and that is still stuck in chamber. I don't have a bore scope, do you have any suggestions ?
Thanks
Stosh

Are there any marks on the new case after having been chambered? It might show up better if you black up that new case with a sharpie and chamber then unchamber it so that you can see where obstruction in the chamber is located.

Can't get case in close to to chamber, I suspect the neck (part of the neck) is stuck in chamber. It is 1/4 to 3/8 from chambering. No marks at all on case. Thanks for the reply!

First thing is put down the hammer. People have died driving a round out of a chamber. If the neck came off running a bore brush in and reversing it in the neck area sometimes pulls the neck portion out. In this case I doubt it will. Everything that's followed the separation has made things worse. It will take some amount of work to clear the chamber.

Either purchase a bore scope to inspect the chamber and bore or take the rifle to a smith that can. As noted above, using a hammer on a firearm with live ammunition is a recipe for disaster!

Use an oversize .38 bore brush and twist it into the chamber and pull it back out. Do this several times to see if it will work.

A broken case extractor is the correct tool. Unfortunately, I have never seen one for a 7 RUM.

This is a case for an experienced rifle smith. Hammers and live ammo don't mix.

Did the owner have a case head separation or not? It seems like a straightforward question, the answer of which could be helpful to the smith.

I've seen recent vintage Rem's with extractor problems. The extractor had to be forced over the case rim to chamber it. Then the case was extremely difficult to extract. Not saying this is the issue here, but just thought I'd note it.

Are we dealing with factory ammo or reloads?

My buddy a had something similar happen. Ultimately, it was just a very small piece of a cleaning patch that was lodged in the chamber.

The case you hammered out should show you if something could still be in chamber. If a portion of the neck was left in, you found try a bronze brush on your cleaning rod, insert it into the chamber and into the bore pase the neck area, rotate it and pull back out. Often any portion of the case stuck or left in will come out on the brush.
A visual check with bore scope should also tell you if something is in the bore/chamber. If you don't have access to one, go to a local gunsmith and see what he can tell you.
