carbon steel folding knife suggestion

My daily carry is a Spyderco Paramilitary in Rex45 steel, I've been happy with it.

For a slip joint, hard to go wrong with the Winchester Black Box knives, Queen cutlery, GEC, Case.

I carry a Boker whittler pocket knife every day.
Started buying them when I was in high school, loosing a few hauling hay, and opening seed bags for the planter.
Now I almost have all the different handle materials Boker offered in this pattern ( whittler) .

Stainless steels like D2 and VG10 sharpen almost as easily as carbon steels even though they are "stainless". D2 is really semi-stainless. Look on a site like bladehq.com, knifeworks.com, knivesshipfree.com, ... and search for folding knives in those steels and you will have at least 1000 to pick from in a wide range of price points. Ontario rat #2 in D2 is a good option.

I had two Benchmades. Both bad knives. Dull poor cutters, both went back to factory twice after very little use. Dull right out of box. And they wouldn't take an edge -- even at factory. No more Benchmades for me. EVER.

By contrast I have two Spydercos that were truly razor sharp from the get go. One is 30 years old and like new. Simple, effective, great steel.

i also have A 3.75” Buck 110 Slim Hunter folder. Stainless blade, razor sharp, and it gets a lot of use. Red Plastic handle. I would buy another Buck without hesitation.

Ironically the blade I use most is a folder I got for my NRA renewal. Black coated blade, Chinese made, but it is super sharp and very smooth.

I started using it because it was free so I didn't care if it was lost. Then I decided it was a really good knife that operates better than some that cost $70.00. Oh... and the little gray spots on the edge are not flaws... it's merely a little plastic residue from just cutting some packing tape.

I'm with Forum Boss on the Benchmades, never could keep them sharp. For inexpensive knives hard to beat case, boker, old timer, camillus, and Kershaws , I presently carry a kershaw with the ken onion blade and really like it. It has a pocket clip which makes access to it real easy. It sharpens easily too. I have others I like, hen and rooster, puma, but they are too expensive to carry and worry about loosing them or damaging them. My biggest beef is people want to borrow your knife and when you ask why they want to use it as a screwdriver . They don't get my knife,it ain't a screwdriver . Sorry bout the rant but it ain't a screwdriver.

i am not sure that i am using the right terminology for the blade, but it is the kind that rusts easy and sharpens easy. i have an opinel and a case. inexpensive is good!
I make knives.. Some carbon steels will be prone to rust. But carbon steel is about the best for general blades. I use D2 tool steel for most of my blades. It is a carbon steel with a high chromium content and is "almost "stainless.

I’m going to be the odd man out and tell you how much I love my bench made with the sheep’s foot blade. I sharpen it maybe once a month on a wicked edge set at 17.5 degrees.

It will sharpen to the point that it’s dangerous. I use it for cleaning birds, opening feed sacks, and all the usual stuff.

I’m sure not all their models are great, but my sheep’s foot “Proper” model is my favorite folder I have ever had.
