Carbon Ring

Lot’s of guys don’t even know back, pre internet, Frank Tirrell, with his series of RF articles in Small Caliber News, wrote about carbon ring, importance of removal, even sold a brass tool for same, well before Calfee penned a word about it.

Shooting Benchrest I clean between cards call it 40-50 ish rounds. Never really build anything to cause a problem. Shooting a 6 card match with the same cleaning although you can slightly see a ring forming it is not enough to cause or make a difference in how the rifle shoots. Soak patch of C4 , regular solvent, bronze BR brush and a few passes clean down to bare metal. Ready for a Match.
I do agree scores are better now. Some amazing targets shot. Just recently seen a IR indoor 250 25X. This is being done with what everyone says is the poorest quality ammo in years. I think it might be that the availability is so difficult to get any ammo you are kind of stuck with what you got. Mediocre ammo at best. Where guys tell me years ago you could just test and endless lots of ammo. I might add at a much lower price. So top match ammo is very expensive now and available is thin.

It's a fascinating topic and covered in one chapter of "The Art of Rimfire Accuracy" by Bill Calfee. As some have mentioned, gravity is a big player. I'll have to reread it. Maybe more than once. Great book.
