carbon ring

I just learned a new way of measuring the distance from your bolt to the end of freebore. Cut your neck in 1/2, seat a bullet in the remainder of the neck, slide the piece of neck that you cut off on the bullet and chamber your round. . I was wondering if this same test would detect a carbon ring?

1.565'' Looks like the measurement I come up with. Maybe Alex Wheeler or someone could chime in ?

Like every road here in Texas that has at least 3 names, terminology is a constant source of confusion. Freebore= leade, throat?

If so, your new measurement device will only determine chamber length, as Dusty wrote, and cannot be used to measure Case Base to Ogive (CBTO). It may also be affected by carbon buildup in the neck area, whereas your measurement of CBTO is affected by carbon buildup in the throat.

True that. So the CBTO will change with different ogive bullets. The measurement device could be used to keep track of carbon build up in the neck.
thanks

What your describing will give you an idea of chamber length. Not exact because theres a 45 at the end of the neck and theres a chamfer on your case, but close.
