IMHO, the best, last thing to go in a barrel is some sort of protectant. I personally use Clenzoil.

Try a small application of JB bore paste, Iosso or Thorroclean on a patch or nylon brush, cleans the carbon ring out in minutes.

I am wintering at Lake Havasu and they have a fantastic range I frequent at SARA. (special activities and recreational area). They have racetrack, rodeo grounds, motocross, bmx, frisbee golf for the libs and more. Signs every where about SARA this and that. There are also hiking trails into the hills and the popular one goes through a long narrow steep rock ravine. There are signs and brochures for the popular hike to SARA's crack. lol. No kiddin.

I suspended the chamber end of a barrel with a carbon ring in an ultrasound and the ring is gone. 40 minutes in hot 3/4 water, 1/4 vinegar and a few drop of Dawn.

I cleaned the barrel and found the all the carbon where I ultrasounded is gone, but above that it is still there. Photo #1 is the end of the neck and freebore, #2 is just above the freebore and #3 is where the ultrasound didn't cover. So if you ultrasounded the entire barrel it would be easy to clean it spotless.
