Carbon ring cure...

100% fool proof way to not have a carbon ring form.... dont shoot it. Just kidding I try and stay ahead by cleaning often and have been using the Boretech products and Some JB when needed. BTW mostly shoot SR benchrest with some varmit hunting threw in, so a clean barrel is a must for me. I purchased a Teslong bore scope and really like being able to tell how the cleaning regimen is working or not working...

For stainless steel barrels and actions only.

If you have a bad shoulder from years of over head work, CLR, 3 patches one minute apart, than rinse with a solution of 70percent water 30 percent alcohol and a small 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda premixed in a quart of water, I use a lab style squeeze bottle with a hose on top. Just a oz or 2. Then 1 patch with saturated with alcohol. Now a good bronze brush saturated with Eds Red. Eds red is cheap to make and us a lot. One stroke for every shot. Patch out with alcohol saturated patch. check with a bore scope. should be nice and clean.

PS I like bore cleaning chemicals that don't stink. For copper run a soaked patch of bore tech at the end let soak for 10 to 15 minutes.

I have used CLR and it worked well to clean out a hard carbon ring when combined with a good bronze brush scrubbing. The only thing to be careful with is to clean it off any blued finish or wood finish. It will remove bluing if it is left on a blued surface but not immediately as long as you clean it off.

I use clr, and believe it takes out carbon. I think if used as it should be, is totally safe. I've seen "tests" where stainless is left in it for 24hr. One comes out unfazed, one comes out etched..so I guess there are no hard and fast rules...rsbhunter

Why would you leave it on for over a few minutes? If you read the label on many rifle cleaning products it has a warning not to leave on for more than recommended time. Many are less than 30 minutes.
There is no magic bore cleaning chemical that is only available to bore cleaner manufacturers. It all comes from earth. house hold vinger will remove blueing on a blued rifle.

One more thing, if you are not using a quality bore guide with a oring that fits as it should, you might move along.

I tried this also. Excellent on carbon. The chemical is a plastic solvent. Do not store it in plastic bottles. Does remove copper as well but slower

I shoot every day practicing at my home range. I've tried everything under the sun as far cleaning goes. I shoot only ppc and I shoot old dirty powders like 8208 pull down, Lt 32 and 133.
1 patch of Wipeout accelerate
Then I use Richard Bressings cleaner. (Best I have found)
With a bronze brush then patch til clean.
6.5 iosso brush caked with iosso to clear carbon ring. A few spins and it's gone. Never clean the brush just keep adding iosso

The best way to avoid cleaning out a carbon ring is to not let it happen. Ask me how I know. My gunsmith put me on to Flitz for stubborn carbon especially in throats with some miles on them. I use the very stiff nylon brushes by Iso on an old section of rod chucked in a drill and spun slowly with a good bore guide to prevent throat damage. Be careful, check frequently, go slow, trust your bore scope. Boretech Eleminator and C4 are my go to solvents to keep the dreaded ring from happening. Flitz makes a sloppy disgusting mess but it works for me.

Don't use Staball HD if you don't want a hell of a ring. It left a wide, tough, belt of carbon on my 300nm. Had to use Kroil, C4 and Wipeout with a 338 bronze brush on a drill. Took forever, but it worked. After that, it took 10 rds to foul it up and shot the best groups so far. I didn't care about damaging anything, since Im getting a new barrel soon so I used a larger diameter and that did it.
