Thanks for the chalk test idea. It was almost impossible to mark the Tipton rod with a piece of chalk (it is only a year old). I'll be trying the same test on my other rods eventually. The common denominator with any rod seems to be keeping it in good condition. The reminder about the health dangers of free carbon fibers is important. Carbonfiber CAN break ...I will continue to use a coated steel rod or a polished steel rod.
