Carbon fiber cleaning rod

johara- That seems to be the concensus from those who extensively use their rods.... perhaps for thousand(s) of passes per year....these same competitrors also own borescopes and can actually detect any bore damage from improper cleaning.
Ivy will be my choice, when my coated Dewey rods start peeling........12 years and still waiting.......says alot for using the proper patch/ jag/guide/ rod combination.
Of course, no matter what rod is used... it must be kept clean and protected from damage.

Just curious as to the solvent you are using and whether you wipe the rod after each pass. I'm not so sure that the carbon coming from the rod doesn't show up on the patch giving the impression that its carbon coming from the bore. I'll try cleaning a brand new barrel just to see what happens.
Finally got to clean a new barrel.
It turns out that the Tipton carbon rod wiped clean without producing dark stains on the cloth.
The other barrel I was cleaning when I noticed the dark stains from wiping the rod must not have been as clean as I thought. Anyway, now I have no more hesitation about using my Tipton rod.

Everybody always talks about a rod that will or will not embed carbon.
Something an old time BR shooter taught me long ago to test your rod is to take a piece of chalk and rub it hard on the rod to see if it sticks, if it does, it will embed carbon.
Try it with any rod, if you really want to know.
Just a thought ???

I'm with Butch as I have machined carbon fiber, I don't want it in my barrel. You dont want one of those very small "hair's" (much smaller than a human hair) in your skin. You may never see any thing negative as long as you are doing every thing right when cleaning. I use the Dewy rod that some people don't like. I keep wiping my rods.

Thanks for the chalk test idea. It was almost impossible to mark the Tipton rod with a piece of chalk (it is only a year old). I'll be trying the same test on my other rods eventually. The common denominator with any rod seems to be keeping it in good condition. The reminder about the health dangers of free carbon fibers is important. The carbon rod will be retired at the first sign of wear or damage.

Strange, I didn't buy a Tipton because it did stick more than an uncoated and a coated rod, plus when I rolled the Tipton on a smooth, level surface, they seemed to have a curve.
Whenever I buy a new rod, I always roll it to check strightness.

I have seen what happens when a rod breaks......that person is still waiting for his tendons to recover.
Carbonfiber CAN break ...I will continue to use a coated steel rod or a polished steel rod.

When my .17 cal Tipton exploded not only was I shocked but looking at that darn thing I was very lucky not to be impaled. I just stood there staring at it knowing I had just avoided a very serious injury.
Yes, the patch was a little too tight but it was'nt stuck. The rod never flexed and I was'nt hammering it like an idiot. Rod just shattered across the grain with no warning.
Sorry to hear of your friends bad luck. I know it will never happen to me again.

Cheers Butch,
Figured there must be some of us here considering our age group and how we like to aim for the center of the circle. ;)
