Carb cleaner

Has anyone tried carb or brake cleaner on a patch to clean their barrels?"

Thank you, "It don't take me long to look at it", I purchased a rifle that appeared to be a smooth bore rifle with no evidence of rifling. I made a few tools for checking the barrel diameter and then found the same tool worked to check for bent barrels if it was long enough. Believe it or not; the tool spun as it went thorough the barrel and stopped on restricted barrels.

Years ago I was reading through reloading forums and discovered they had problems solving problems, when it came to cleaning barrels that wore the muzzle to a taper. The reloader had a number of tools available, there was the string with a fishing weight, there were chains etc. and they had gages that measured throat and muzzle tapper. Anyhow I made a tool, I do not have all of the problems reloaders have. I eliminated the problems, most of the stuff I use came from a dumpster.

Back about 100 years ago cleaning a bore was made more difficult by the material used to make bullets, the first solution was to 'grease your bullets', and then shooter went ape on the grease. If scrubbing with a brush did not remove the bullet material they went to a process that did not require running the cleaning rod with a patch and or brush.

I have used carburetor cleaner, the carburetor cleaner I am talking about is not the stuff that comes in a spray can, I am talking about the 5 gallon bucket of stuff that comes with a basket.

I found that brake cleaner had a small amount of water in it. I'll clean parts with it, but I'll lube after for sure.

OK so now we know you used carburetor cleaner. Can you expand a bit on your opinion of whether or not it was any good at cleaning a rifles' bore? If you are a gunsmith I would think by the amount you have on hand (5 gallon bucket in a basket) you are impressed with the effects? If you are a mechanic then maybe NOT so much for cleaning rifle bores?

Guffy has told you the story on buying an 03 with no visible rifling 4 times. He is baiting you in to asking how he fixed the rifle. Now go ahead and ask so we can hear his super human tale.

I know that stuff.....surprised if it is still being sold in the formula I had. 5 gallon bucket, beautiful metal basket, and cleaned everything. I remember the smell. Also remember it made your skin tingle if you got it on you.

Not interested!!!! Only looking for info on the thread title!

I use Brake Cleaner to clean my bronze brushes so that they do not deteriorate from my harsh barrel cleaning solutions. Never in my barrels.

Ebb, so I will assume you have nothing to offer, it seems others feel threatened, I hear it everyday, reloaders in the claims department make claims they have been reloading for 40 + years, when threatened the reloaders in the claims department get all potty mouth.

A member on this forum said he got rid of a rifle built by P.O. Ackley, he side he was told the barrel was shot out, 'AND THEN' I said I have 2 old machines that makes tools, head space gages, piolets and anything that requires grinding to length and needs a tapper; or anything that could be considered a cone (the cone locks up the reloader). The easies tool to make is a straight piolet, I find it very easy to determine if the barrel is shot out/washed out, oversized or undersized. And with the same tool, if it is long enough, I can determine if the barrel is straight.

Yup most have changed their formulas.. From a motor cleanup standpoint which is removing oil , grease and carbon the cheapest stuff used to be the best.. The cheap yellow can AutoZone or O'Reilly used to sell worked ALOT better than the name brand..
It would remove baked on carbon like hot butter , grease , oil and paint... I'm sure they have changed it by now or stopped selling it do to some banned chemical...
Which seafoam do you people use.
There are 2different ones

Yup it was Berrymans Carb Cleaner, I believe. It would make your skin look and feel like tanned leather, nasty stuff for sure.

Chem-Dip's "Basket in a Bucket". It was the best thing since sliced bread for a Rochester Quadra-Jet teardown :)

I used to use B-12 chemtool, can't find it around here anymore. I would use it alone or mix 2 parts chemtool with 1 part transmission fluid for an easy version of "Ed's Red" bore cleaner. Ed's Red was a concoction dreamed up at one of the arsenals where smalls arms testing is done. I can't remember which one.
