Canadian Govt abolishes Long Gun Registry

To my American buddies, that noise you may have just heard in your attic was the Conservative Canadian Government voting to abolish the Long Gun Registry. Purchases of what are considered to be "normal" hunting and target rifles and shotguns no longer have to phoned in to a database in a central registry. The Act also destroys previous registration records.

Canadian firearms owners still require a personal firearms licence (PAL), must own a PAL to buy ammunition and handguns must still be registered. Handguns can only be used for target practise at a gun club.

My uncle hunted deer in Ontario with a .357 Mag back in the 1950s when it was legal to do so. The revolver had to be carried in a holster outside the clothing - no concealment. The pinkos eventually banned hunting with a handgun. Handgun permits in Canada are a Provincial matter, not Federal. So the next step is to get a right wing government in the Ontario legislature and go from there.

Thanks for the report. A little more research revealed that the Long Gun Registry is not, officially dead yet. This report from the Herald News today:

OTTAWA — Federal Conservatives erupted in cheers Wednesday after finally securing House of Commons approval to scrap the controversial long-gun registry.

The Harper government used its majority to pass the bill by a vote of 159-130, with the support of two maverick New Democrats — John Rafferty and Bruce Hyer.

All other NDP, Liberal, Bloc Quebecois and Green MPs voted against it.

The vote effectively puts the registry on life support; all that remains is for the Senate to pull the plug. Since the Conservatives enjoy a commanding majority in the upper chamber as well, the registry’s fate is sealed.

“They’ve got the majority and unless something extraordinary happens, it will pass,” acknowledged Liberal Senate leader James Cowan.

Forum Boss.......good reply. I didn`t put the mention of the Senate vote in my post because the Canadian Senate tends to be a rubber stamp. No comparison to the U.S. Senate.

The 2 rebel voters were banned from their caucus on second reading of the Bill because they had the nerve to actually represent their constituents. I think there was a 3rd rebel voter. After the 2 New Democrats sat down I turned away and heard a 3rd name read out??

Anyway, the Long Gun Registry has stuck in the craw of rural, Western and Northern Canadians for 15 years. We all had fathers, uncles and grandfathers who died in two World Wars for personal freedom and we didn`t rest until it was gone.

You beat me to it 1000yardstare ;D Good news for all gun owners in Canada! What was originally touted as going to cost 2 million dollars funded entirely from the registration fees...ballooned to cost Canadian Tax Payers 3 Billion! >:( Useless piece of legislation rife with inaccuracies that saw people registering power drills, toasters and lawn sprinklers! All the lefties up here are crying, "Oh my God! We're gonna become just like the U.S. now! Yeh...I hope so! 8)

Congratulations to Canadian shooters. When Obama gets re-elected we will have the battle of our lives to keep our firearms.

Obama will not get re-elected if we vote him out.I know dems who are sick of his ineffectual leadership and socialism agenda. His obama care will permanantly destroy the medical care we need and further cause many deaths from corporate decisions made without merit ,as to save whomever they feel is a good investment.I for one am glad my brothers and sisters in canada can now enjoy the rights they deserve.
