Can you see holes at 400yds?

Just got back from a match. Five shots at 400Yds were all left of center about 5". Shooting a 7-08. Have a B&L Discoverer about 25 yrs old. It has a blur in it, have cleaned it, but still there. Stays in same place when I change power or focus. 15x60x I think. Anyway, couldn't see any shots in white (black marker on bullets), so basically lost. Pretty good conditions, not much mirage. My scope is a Simmons up to 25x, so no help. Might get a Weaver T36, probably not good enough, either??

I would like to see a sticky or ?? on what you guys are using and how they (spotter or rifle scope) do. Am I the only one that can't? What do the guys using tactical scopes, 10-20x use to see their holes, a spotting scope or ?? Maybe they shoot gongs, a whole diff ball game, I suppose.

Thanks, Ron.

I have noticed a yellow blur in my scope and can't clean it off, I think I have the start of cataracts. With the night force 42x you can see the bullet holes all the way out to 600yrds on white paper. That depends on the light and caliber also.

I've mentioned before a couple times that what I do is go to Menards or some building products place and buy 2'x4' siding underlayment that is basically 1/4" styrofoam with a foil backing on one side. I then get a roll of 18" wide clear contact paper (goes by the trade name Con-Tact) and cover the foil side with it. You need to go over each seam though with clear Scotch tape or it will roll up. I then get the cheapest flat black spray paint I can find and spray 2 coats over the contact paper. Then I use 1" orange stick on dots as targets. When the paint is hit, it chips off and the foil shows through a little less than the size of a dime. I'm able to see these hits out to 600 yards with my old Buschnell 15x45 spotting scope. After shooting, I take the board home and cover each bullet hole with a small piece of clear Scotch tape and just respray each spot with flat black again and I'm ready to shoot again. These last quite awhile depending how many shots are hit.
Just something that has worked for me for a couple years.

Here is my 400y target. Just throw out the hi/left one :-[
Could have adjusted to right/up some and got much better score.
My optometrist tells me I have cataracts every year for about 10yrs. My Optimologist tells me to wait awhile, for about 10yrs. Something about newer tech may come out ::) Never thought about that scope smear connection, but you may have nailed it :)

22BRGuy, that sounds like a excellent idea. My problem would be talking 10 or 12 other guys into letting me use it during their match ::) Thanks for the tips. Ron.

Well thought out and thorough description Dave. Maybe I will try to look thru others scopes and do some comparisons next month. This type of comp is new to me. Doing better though, last match I only hit the 400y target twice :'( This old benchrest shooter never knew anyone was crazy enuf to use cold bore shots, no sighters and no wind flags. Maybe exept those marmot guys--hunters--soldiers, hmm, maybe they're onto something.
That's a nice group there RMulhern. Wish I could come close to it. Too bad it was only 3 shots. Maybe a few more years of practice, u can try 5 ;). Jus sayin, have seen that name in many shooting reports. Just spoofin, either way. Thanks guys. Ron.

That was just a confirmation of a 600 yard zero! The ONLY time I ever shoot just three is for confirmation so here's 10 the rifle shot from 600 yds. this afternoon when I was fire-forming some Win brass I had turned the necks on. Was shooting Sierra 168 gr. HPBT to fire-form with since I have a ton of the damn things left over from my NRA HP days shooting Match Rifle. As an aside...the ones out the top at 12 o/clock glanced off the top of the 5" diameter plate. Wind picked up just a bit from 3 o/clock so I held slightly off the plate and two went slightly right. The rifle really shoots good; especially well with Berger 185 VLDs which I was fire-forming these cases for. I've had....quite a bit of practice the last 60 years. ;D ;)
