Can someone make me a modified case?

I know that the hornady tools utilize a really specific thread pitch......and I do not have that tap, so....does anyone have it?

I have a 223AI and really need a case to help figure out my COAL......

I had the same problem. My sporting goods store found and bought one. Check out your local gunsmiths. If you are in dire need, I can PM you the name and number of the store. They might build and mail it too you. I can ask later this week.

Just use a standard 223 modified case, results should be the same if the bolt gives you slight resistance on closing on the case, i e no extra headspace. If the AI chamber was done correctly, it should have tighter headspace than a reg 223, which will give you a little "crush" when you close the bolt on a reg 223 case. You will want to put the modified case through the crush procedure before using it to measure bullet seating depth so that the headspace is adjusted close to your rifle's actual headspace.

Send me your shipping address, when I get home I will look I think I have one, if not when I get time this weekend I could build you one, if you have a standard chamber, if not you may have to use your f/l die and size it.
Wayne.

I can do it for you if Wayne doesn't have something for you. I usually use a wilson trimmer case holder, put a fired round in the holder and then into the lathe a drill it under sized. I then finish bore it to tap drill size and run the tap in. Unfortunately I don't have a wilson 223 improved holder but I'm sure I can figure something out ;). Like I said if Wayne can't help you out send me a couple of fired cases in a padded envelope with a prepaid envelope inside so I can return it to you.

Oh I forgot, I am making an order with sinclair in the morning so let me now and I will by a holder to do it.

If ya want to send me a couple fired cases I'll drill and tap them on my lathe like I did the other day for my wildcat. I was in the same boat and one night was sitting here looking at my G0509G with its 2J Hardinge collet closer and realized how easy it would be. So I ordered the tap and never looked back. Just shoot me a pm and I'll give you my mailing address.

Tac,
I do the process the same as you, didn't think about the improved case, I have improved cases but not sure if I have a Wilson holder, I have one for the std. .223 but I may have to order one also, good thinking ;)

wow, thanks for the all interest and help here guys....I pm'd Joe C and he's going to help me out! I have to wait for my bolt to get back from the fluting group buy on the hide, and i'll be fireforming and good to go. I have a bunch of cases that i've shot, but (stupidly) i had my trimmer set up incorrectly and trimmed them all (250ish) too short!

You don't need a Wilson Case Holder at all, in fact it makes it quite harder and can damage a case as the required grip force is too much and the case will slip. Been there done that trying to make Gauges using a drill press.

Far easier is using a small Lathe. Put the case in the chuck and nip up, no great force is required. I just visit a neighbour who builds minature steam engines and use his small lathe.

I could not find the exact drill required but far easier was using a 7.5mm drill when it comes to threading...just a fraction larger than the suggested 19/64th drill required. Feed by hand to keep a constant cut, no pressure required.

Swap the drill out for the Tap, plenty of thread lube and again ... Hand Feed. Run the tap completely through.

Tap size is 5/16-36 HS ...eBay made in China....

I make all mine and "Fire Formed Cases" are necessary if you want to be accurate with your seating measurements.

They take about 5 minutes to make.

Pity I'm in Australia, would love to have helped.

A tip....

If you are fire forming cases to make an OAL Gauge and have a Wilson Case Trimmer then trim the Head of the Case ever so slightly before you fire it to square the head face then you will have more consistant measurements with your calipres.

Totally wrong I have made a lot of them using the Wilson case holder and had ZERO issues with process.

How timely,
I am mailing of my cases to Hornady today for (3) 308 rifles and (2) Dasher's. The down side is that they told me it would be a minimum of 3-4 weeks to get them back. If one of you guy would like to do mine in a shorter time period, I will just change the name on the check and send them to you. Please PM or email me if anyone is interested.

Thanks,
Tim

This P/N 395-516-321WB @ Brownell's is for a Taper Tap, 5/16-32, 9/32, 21/64 Mfr Part: 1331 not the 5/16-36 to fit the Hornady or Stoney Point gauges.
