Hornady OAL tool?

Does anyone know what size and thread pitch they are? I have one ordered and was going to drill and tap the case. Would it be better to use a as fired case or a resized case, will it matter?

Thanks

A fired case than is neck sized only.

Use Sinclair’s instead, no need to modify/destroy good brass you’ve fully fire formed to that chamber.

Also remember that the bullet needs to be able to slid in (and out) with light finger tension while being able to be chambered by hand as well. For $4.95 I gave up making them and bought what I needed.

Resized case would be best. If you have a bushing die, remove the bushing before sizing.

If you size the neck, you will need to expand till you are able to insert a bullet smoothly by hand. Most expanders don't expand enough to allow slip fit on the bullet. A custom expander is almost needed.

If you use a fired case, make sure it fits in the chamber easily.

F/L size case to with a .002" shoulder bump
Expand neck with mandrel.
Seat a bullet in the case and pull it back out. If you have a collet bullet puller, do this repeatedly using the collet pullet to seat bullet and pull it out as well.
Chuck up a bullet in a drill and apply lapping compound to bullet and run it in the neck. Check for fit as you progress. Do this until bullet slides in and out smoothly.

One thing to be aware of is when you tap that case, it will tend to expand the head... So make sure that case still slides easily in and out of your chamber after tapping...

I've tapped about 100 cases of so in various cases, smallest being 20 vartarg and never had this happen.

if that happens you are doing something VERY wrong.

I haven't done 100 but done quite a few. Never had this happen either. Possibly wrong drill size (small) could cause it.

Haven't had that happen either.

I do not use the Hornady version. Used a threaded rod and modified cases before I ever saw the Hornady version.

Case is modified by drilling and tapping the case head end, and the neck has been slotted with a Dremeil cutting wheel with the burs from the cut removed. a simple pinch takes care of more tension when needed. Start with a case that has been sized the way you will be sizing your brass, be that FL, .003 bump or what ever you like.

Once you have everything like you want it, load a dummy round for setting up dies in the future, if changing bullets or what ever. Makes it easy to reset the dies to reproduce ammo.
