Can a 6.5x284 type s be used for 284 win?

I've been trying to find the answer to this question but my search skill is weak. Assuming you used the proper bushing, say .310 in the redding 6.5x284 Full length die would it otherwise size the dimensions correctly? Main reason is the 6.5x284 die is cheaper, no biggie if it won't work. Thanks for the help.

If you mean "6.5-284", I don't find a specification on the SAAMI site, so is it still considered a wildcat, and thus subject to interpretation (or is SAAMI lax in site upkeep)? I know of at least two versions, one being Norma's. Maybe they're all the same.

Since this is presumably a production 'Type S' die (from your subject line) best to contact Redding - horse's mouth as it were.

A) The SAAMI site doesn't have all the latest and greatest.

B) Norma is a Swedish Company, and Sweden is a CIP member. The 6.5-284 Norma cartridge would have to have been submitted to the CIP (from the CIP Website: "Type Approval (Homologation) and the Inspection and Check of Commercial Ammunition : Firms wishing to manufacture, to market, or to import small arms ammunition within the C.I.P. (i.e. in a C.I.P. signatory state), must apply for C.I.P. Type Approval (Homologation).") in order to be sold (and was, in 1999). CIP and SAAMI don't always keep super-up-to-date with each other, though. Norma's parent company, RUAG maintains a US subsidiary which is a SAAMI member, don't know if they ever submitted it to SAAMI for sure. I'm pretty sure, however, that for liability reasons, nobody would manufacture and sell 6.5-284 Norma ammo in the US if it weren't SAAMI certified, though it's possible that they may rely on CIP certification instead.

The 6.5-284 Norma is NOT a wildcat.

You might have issues with the shoulder/neck junction area in a full length sizing die, as there would be that extra ¼ mm each side of the neck that the die would not size.

On the other hand, my turned neck .30/284 has maybe .003" clearance at the neck of a Wilson Neck only die, and Wilson made a custom seating die for only $20 more than a standard calibre die.

wi1,,,,NO,,,,the hole in the neck of the die is too small (big enuff for a 6.5 cal ctg neck to clear but not a 7mm) ,,,,conversely you can use a 284 die to size 6.5mmx284 with the correct bushing ,,,I hope this makes sense to you,,,I think the others were thinking headspace or datum or base line dimensional differance ,,,,Roger

Thanks expiper. That was the info I was looking for. I am just going to get the whidden fl bushing die for the 284 and call it a day!

You can open the hole up enough to make it work, did it to my 338/284 with out a problem with a 284 bushing die.....
