Camping/Sightseeing far south east Oregon

Looks like a few of us are going to be in the far southeast corner of Oregon around Memorial Day camping, maybe fishing and looking for chucks and little critters to shoot. We are going to be by the Owyhees around the Three Forks area but are open to traveling. Anyone have any places that should be looked at or checked out? I’ve been in the general area exploring last year, my brother and I went to Five points and came out on the Jackson creek rd. Is there anything in Idaho that needs looked at? Is there a Blm road that crosses the Owyhee or goes from Oregon to Idaho?

I lived in the Vale area back in the late 70's. The best way to find roads/trails now may be google earth or topo maps since roads probably have changed some. Take a good flat shooting coyote gun with you. Anywhere from Vale to burns will give you tons of critters to hunt. That may help some, good fishing and hunting in that country and more water than you would think. Pigs/hogs,are shoot on sight as well.

You are going to some of the most beautiful and remote country in -- the country -- and for damned sure in Oregon. You will run out of time long before you run out of places to explore and enjoy.

As you know, travel is slow, and distances are far out there, and depending on the weather in May, -- well, I've seen it when a lot of travel wasn't hardly possible. Generally you'll be OK, but too much rain can be a game changer.

I personally hate to see folks kill the coyotes out of fur season, as those little critters are a valuable resource for a lot of folks who have pretty lean incomes in a area that is hard to make a living at best. Depending on the year, jack rabbits are usually plentiful enough to provide sport for a guys "blood thirsty" moments.

I haven't been over there for awhile, but the spring-time rafting industry was getting pretty popular on the Owyhee, and the Three Forks area was seeing an influx of those folks at this time of year. After the water goes down, they're done.

I based most of my activities in the Rome area, calling coyotes, deer hunting, and in general burning lots of gas. Three Forks Hot Spring is very cool, and the branches of the river have great small mouth fishing.

This thread brings back many fond memories, and I'ma hafta find my pitchers.:) jd

Thanks for the replies, very much appreciated! Please do break out the pictures, I’ll put some on here also from our trip a year ago if I can.

There's a decent road that goes from Jordan Valley OR to Grandview ID. Paved in the lowlands on both ends, gravel over the highlands, from around the North Fork Owyhee River to Poison Creek in ID. Middle part is the "Mud Flat Road". Uncountable side road off this "thoroughfare", but most are two tracks and slow to go.

I suggest an ATV or such for exploring. Back in the day, I hunted antelope with my wife and newborn son near Little Jacks Creek in our Toyota FJ40. Roads were so rough, we were afraid of the little guy gettin' shaken baby syndrome!

Have fun!

I've spent some time exploring eastern OR, things I remember:
Steens Mt / Alvord Desert
The Lost Forest
Christmas Valley
Crack In The Ground
John Day Fossil Beds
Some great country there.

Found a few snap shots, and took phone pics of them. This is in the Three Forks area, and of the Three Forks Hotspring. It is probably the best one I've ever been to, and this from a guy who takes hot springing seriously!

It is hard to convey the "bigness" of this country from a snap-shot. It will make ya feel small. Be prepared to save yourself if anything goes wrong. You are literally a few hundred miles from nowhere.

These shots are from probably twenty + years ago, but I don't really think you'll find a 7-11 there now. I've hunted deer, coyotes, chucker, rattler, and rabbits over there, and done well at all of them. jd

Here's the lake that the river comes from, and a camp where my wife and step daughter set up a few years ago. Lake is famous for big rainbow (red band) trout. Also famous for shallow water, algae blooms, and astounding bug hatches of green midges. Show up for a visit at the WRONG time of year, and you'll likely never come back. jd

You ever go to the fur sale? We’ve sold there in March a couple times. Went through there a couple years ago also.
