Camp Perry 2021

Is this because the CMP wanted to divorce it self from Wayne controversial actions or did they boot the NRA for other reasons?
This has been a few years in the making, and divorced s few years ago. The two were never really attached. They have different rule books for the same sport. NRA is no longer at Perry because they both couldn’t play nice and share a schedule. Seems as CMP won staying at Perry and having more shooters.

I was interested in military style matches years ago and went to a service rifle match with a friend in Okeechobee FL. My friend was loading the truck and asked me to carry a Garand rifle out to the tail gate. i wrapped my hand around the rifle in front of the action and he went ballistic. Seems that the handguard was bedded and so delicate that touching it could cause irreparable damage. As we rode to the match he talked about how much time and money were spent on service rifles to make them shoot just a little better than all the others. I thought how is this a service rifle if it is so much different than a rifle that is in a rack at Parris Island. They have a way to make every thing equal when they race horses, its called a claiming race. When you win a claiming race the other owners can claim your horse for the value of the race. So if you try to win in a group of horses that are worth 5000 dollars with a horse that is worth a 10000 horse you could have another owner claim the horse for the price tag of the race. if i could have bought a rifle and shot competitively without all the tricks and tweeks I would have been all over it.

John C Garand Matches should be right up your alley. Basically no modifications allowed from issue configuration other that a replacement barrel. Check today's Bulletin.

That seems a bit extreme, but yes they are glass bedded. The rules for service rifles aren’t exactly loose, but you can use a krieger of the same external contour , a smoother up trigger that is still 4.5 pounds minimum, half minute sights, hand loads rather than ball, etc. I think you have to be able to improve these rifles some while still keeping all the hurdles these rifles present otherwise after your a master level shooter it’s all just luck of the least flyers. If the gun only holds 8 ring size groups, is there really a difference in skill of a shooter that shot a 87-3 x vs 89-2x? I’d say it’s just luck at that point.

"That seems a bit extreme, "
Match prepared Garands can be somewhat fragile in the upper fore end wood area due to material removed to provide clearance for the gas system. This modification is not allowed on a rifle used in a true J C Garand match. Bad JuJu to pick up a true match prepped one by grasping the fore end.

There are multiple reasons. NRA doesn't seem to care much about competition and they never had the number of the competitors that the cmp matches had. With those small numbers, they couldn't afford what OH NG was charging, Indiana was supposed to be cheaper.
The NRA are incompetent nincompoops but the cmp are not innocent either. The cmp is a corporation, unlike the DCM was. The CMP have been a snake in the grass and they were more than happy to crush any vestige of the nra matches.
What is a shame is how cool the old trophies the nra has. The cmp will never come.close to them.

I was there for rimfire sporter, match attendance was down , only ran 3 relays and they were not 100% full, but still fun as allows!
Vendor row was rather sad....

Several years ago, I was told a story from an older sling shooter. He said that the 1000yd high power range at Whittington Center was all built from donations. So that they would have a place to hold national matches, if they ever got kicked out of Camp Perry. The NRA has gotten greedy, and wants crazy money per shooter daily fee, for matches held there. If it weren’t for this, there could probably be more matches held there.

What input does the NRA have with this?

nothing against Nez's work, but uppers were not our problem.

You guys still hold the NTIT record. Good shooting.

NTT record set by TX in 2016 is still holding. Thank you so much to @Shiraz for donating 4 March scopes to the 2016 team. Credit also goes to Butch for facilitating the dialogue between me and @Shiraz that led to the design and introduction of March scopes purposely built for service rifle.

See you next year, bud.

Money. Construction. Facilities.

NRA uses the ranges at Atterbury for ridiculously low amounts of money. I don’t remember the exact amount I was told, and it’s not my business to be posting it anyway.

The Indiana Guard was/is willing to build what NRA needs, i.e. the pistol complex. They also get use of several buildings for the matches.

Atterbury has on base housing available, some dining facilities, and proximity to the towns of Franklin and Columbus.

It should have drawn tons of shooters, right?

NRA got permission to use the ranges bur that was about it. Commercial row at Perry was big for the social event, as were places like Andy's party mart for the ice cream and other restaurants. Shooters could stay in the huts and it made for a stronger community feel for the matches.
I hope NRA will do better but the couple of times I went to atterbury, they have not. Contacting some local restaurants and getting a special for shooters would be great. They could congregate elsewhere besides the matches.
I don't want to see the NRA matches disappear but if you look at it more like a customer/business relationship, cmp is trying to give the shooters what they want.

They picked terrible dates. July/August in Indiana is not prime. September/October would be better. As a plus, there are few places more beautiful than that area when the leaves change
