Camp Butner in NC?

It’s been a few years since I shot hi-power at Butner. While reading through threads I began to wonder how many members here shoot or did shoot there. I spent a lot of time there and had great fun. If you shot there tells us about it.

The NSSC contingent that came over and shot with me at the 1997 Oak Ridge NRA LRR invited me over to shoot one of their Fall LR matches that same year. I've been attending 1 or 2 of their annual LR matches since, except for this year, when the Ironman was cancelled. It's a 565-mile trip for me, one-way. I always tried to make those matches when Pete Hodges was doing the pig pickin'. I also got my first "wooden nickel" from him! Never shot NRA HP there.

Pete was “ da man “. He also gave me my first wooden nickel. I remember he appreciated dedicated well organized shooters, and didn’t care much for slackers. His favorite saying was “it ain’t the arrow, it’s the Indian”. Long range matches were the most fun if you had a puller. One of my friends and I would sit under the canopy when Pete would park his travel trailer behind the 1000 yard line. We would eat popcorn and drink cokes until our relay. Fun times bs’ing years ago.

Pete has been retired now for many years and we do miss him. North State Shooting Club is still carrying on the club that he started and doing well. Unfortunately the 1,000 yard line has been closed to us until September next year due to construction directly behind it. We are having to limit matches to 600 yds. max but across the course is still carrying on. Northstateshootingclub.com

Quinton Stott...that is a name I haven't heard in a long time. It was usually in the same breath as Mike Luper and other true gentlemen that frequented the pits at Camp Butner. I was one of McFarling's snot-nosed juniors that never could kick the highpower habit and have been at it ever since. I was working in Alabama for a few years, and now in South Carolina. So its been a while since I've been to Butner, but plan to get up there this summer to shoot. Still shooting down here in SC. Hope you're doing well and that you get your gear back out and come shoot.

Take care,

John Teachey

John Teachey, well there you are!
I'm still alive Blair, just trying to find time to shoot between kid's practices, school events, and work. My oldest is showing some interest in starting, so I think she's gonna shoot a little AR-Tactical this year to get her feet wet and if she likes it, I have a service rifle ready for her. Hope to see you at Butner soon. I'm going to make it up there this year, just waiting for the weather to get a little warmer.

Still shooting there? Yep. Started around 2000 through today. Mostly XTC, little bit of LR/Palma sprinkled in there. I live very close to Lejeune's Stone Bay ranges, but Butner is pretty much my "home range."

I climbed the ladder a lot at Butner. Everything from a lowly 19 year old Expert who easily ended up the low man on the final resuts to several time XTC state champion. Overall won the Eastern CMP Cup in 2023. Couple of other things from Butner as well.;)

Shot there as a civilian and in uniform on a USMC post/station team (also shot a bunch there while still in the USMC, but on my own dime/rifle).

Got my oldest son (17) started at Butner back when he was 12. He's gone from "couldn't hit the target very well" to the overall winner of a XTC match (491/500). Been high junior at several events at Butner. Got his first Leg points (8 pt hard leg) at last year's State Championship EIC/Governor's 10. He was 2nd place overall/High Service rifle (match rifle won 1st for the Gov's 10). Right now he's just a few hundredths of a percentage from cracking into XTC High Master. He's dabbled into some Palma as well. Got a loaner Palma rifle from John Frigiguletti. LR Master, almost High Master. He picked up the prone stuff quicker than the XTC. . . Although with some years of SR experience behind him.

Fun story: Back in early June 2007, my wife was almost 6 months pregnant with him. Camping was allowed at Butner's 1000 yard line. We pitched a tent and camped there for a LR match. The weekend nearest her birthday . . . And pretty warm. I still catch grief over that.:p

Youngest son (11) shot at Butner for the first time this year. Probably get him started XTC later this year. He wants to catch and beat his brother.

XTC Weather match the weekend after this. Yours truly will be the Match Director for that one.

Dude, there's the Polar Bear match. You should have come out for it. That match has it's own traveling trophy (with the bear on top).

This year warranted it. It was cold. Snow still on the north faces of berms and in the shadows.

I like shooting at Butner. Am trying to fit more of their matches in my schedule this year. The wind can be very switchy at times which makes it very interesting to shoot LR.

Chris, the older I get the more of a fair weather shooter I become. I hate the cold with a passion. 95 and humid, no problem. But let it get into the 40’s and I’m miserable.
