Cambering Lube?

OK, I don't pretend to be a gunsmith, just a shooter and hobby machinist with an old SB 9" lathe. I am about to cut my first chamber. I ordered a new Manson 308 reamer with the appropriate bushing. I don't have a "flushing" system on my lathe. What should I use for cutting lube?

I buy my cutting oil 10 gallons at a time in 5 gallon pails. Not very practical for you. Just get a gallon of dark thread cutting oil at your local big box store.

Shhhh...
Don't tell anyone you're chambering between centers ;)

J/K... good luck with it. Make sure to use a good lube on the steady fingers, and make a truing cut on the muzzle end (as well as the breech for the steady)- collets are a quick/accurate way to hold it at the headstock if you have them.

Mr. Dickinson, call me at 1-269-521-3671 and I will send you a bottle of Viper's Venom Chambering Oil.

tobnpr,

What a great idea, using a collet instead of a 4-jaw chuck. Thank you so much for suggesting it!

How accurate do you want your chamber to be in relation to the lands and grooves?
I did put it between centers and turn about 3/4" of the muzzle down to 1/2" (my largest collet) using a live center in the tailstock. Shouldn't that center the bore in the collet? It's going to be a 200 yd. hunting rifle, so while I look for accuracy in all my rifles, I am not looking for the same level of accuracy as I would expect from a LR rifle I sent to a qualified gunsmith to rebarrel.

There is a possibility the bore os off center... NOTE: I have not chambered a barrel. I have toasted a machinegun barrel.. Army all the way...lol..
