Calling all XP-100 gurus!!!

Im still debating what caliber will perform very well from a 14 inch rem varmint contour barrel... i need to start shopping for a barrel...

the pistil will be primarily target shooting and hunting from a blind.... shooting nothing bigger than white tail...

6x47lapua, 6.5x47, 6 creedmoor, 6.5 creedmoor, 284win, 7mm-08?

Open to suggestions... i dont want to have something that wont burn all the powder and waste some... i will have a side port muzzle brake on it... im leaning hard on 6x47 running 105 bergers...

what would yall do? What would you not do?

buy two, cut barrel blank in half and chamber each a different cal, just for fun, I had a 222 and a 221 built, same blank, easily could have been a 223, 222br, 22-204 egt. combo take your pick using your 6mm blank one target and one hunting chamber.

If you enjoy messing around with brass, you might enjoy the wildcats, but that necking up or down can become a chore after a while, especially neck turning donuts. For that reason, 6x47L and 6 Creed get knocked off the list.

The 284 is a lot of cartridge, and if elk were in the mix, that would be my choice. For whitetail, it might be a bit more recoil and muzzle blast for the task.

Of the list, 6.5 Creed or 7-08 would likely get the nod from me. You might actually be able to find ammo in a pinch and perform well for the tasks you describe.

6.5x47L is a twin to the Creed, and is the one I am chambering in an XP, but your chances of finding loaded ammo at any local source is nil. Laupa is the only brass manufacturer, but that is fine in my book.

I have a 300WSM and it shoots bug holes at 100yds.It has a 15" barrel with a Holland radial brake and the bipod doesn't leave the bench when you shoot it . I have shot several 1/2" groups . I also have a 30-338 win mag that shoots very well. I mainly use them for long range steel shooting , but I am going to hunt Elk this year with the WSM, wouldn't hesitate on a 400 yd shot off the bipod.

I've been shooting 6.5X47L in my XP-100 pistol for about ten years now. Next to the 7BR, it is in my opinion one of the best choices you have listed for your XP-100. Any of the 6mm's with heavy bullets are not a good choice, as you may have to use a very slow burning powder in that short barrel. My 6.5X47L XP is a 9 twist, 14 inch, .780" contour Hart barrel. My best results are with bullets in the 120-130g. range, with the 120's achieving the best performance in the 9 twist. I have other XP-s in 6ppc, 6BR., 7BR, 221FB, and have had others in 6.5X284, 7/08, 223, and 35 Remington. With that said, the 7BR remains as one of my all time favorite cartridges for the XP pistol!

I had two 7br, from the same Hart bbl, done by Bobby Hart, one set up for scope and the other for iron sight in sil comp.

the scope one I used for deer using the 130 sierra pistol bullet, --deadly.

7mm BR is a hard hitting round, it came out for knocking over steel targets (silhouette matches). I loved knocking down the rams (about 47 lbs) at 200 m. I shot 140's loaded with 748 and could clean the targets and that was with iron sights. A 6.5 mm BR might burn the powder in the short barrel. I shot against the 7mm IMSA and it was too much for the 15" barrel, twice the muzzle blast. That guy never could beat me with his Witchata. As I remember with a scope my factory stock XP-100 in 7mm BR shot 1 1/4" groups at 200 yds during load development off bags. that was with the old R-P 7mm BR brass and what I formed from .308 R-P Benchrest as well as 308 military. I had shot the XP-100 for several years before you could buy the formed brass in 7mm BR.

Those 125 gr BTs really shoot don't they? I have a real plain 30-06 built on a turk mauser and it shoots clover leafs with 125 BTs. I am thinking on a gun where recoil might be an issue like a XP100, something chambered that will take advantage of the 125 might be a good idea. Or a 300 blackout shooting supersonic.

1. Blind hunting,what distance are expecting to take a deer?
2. Why a 14"barrel?
3.after market stock or original zytel stock?

If you are going past the 250-300 yd range the 284 or 6.5x284 would work well as any of the SAUM,WSM calibers.
All of mine are 15" barrels +thebrake except one 284 and it is 18.5"including the brake.
What type of glass are you going to use.
Centergrip or rear grip stock,barrel length will determine how the gun will balance.

All mine will shoot into a half inch or less @100yds, most into quarter inch or less, includes 223 up to and including my 325WSM HSP.
The barrel+the stock+the build will all determine if you have ashooter or not. Good luck with your build and as most of handgunners will tell ,it's hard to own just one 8) 8)

I have several Rem.xp100's(7br, 6mm/22-250 imp,7/08, 358 winchester, (2) 284 winchester and a 284 Shehane) during my deer hunting days I love the straight 284 winchester and the Speer 130 bt. bullet.

Finally a question I can post my experiences that may be useful to another shooter here. I built my XP-100 into a rear grip McMillan stocked, .22 BR heavy stainless Douglas bbl'd varmint gun and she is quite deadly out past 300 yds with the EER 3-12 Burris scope.
When my little Brother went to Iraq for his second tour, I had his .22-250 XP-100R rebarreled with a Douglas chrome-moly thin profile in 6MM BR and mounted a 3-9 EER Burris. This gun shoots lights out and will compete with rifles at equal distances and is likewise deadly with the Sierra and Hornady SSP bullets in 80 gr weight on Whitetails.
If I were to build another, I would chose the 6.5X47Lapua using 120-130 gr Berger hunting bullets and never look back. I am not certain why you place an emphasis on total efficiency on propellant consumption, but a bit of muzzle flash never hurt anything and your brake will dissipate it somewhat.

I'd pick a dasher long before I got another 6x47Lapua. I've had/have both in XP's and the dasher is much better. That being said I'd get something a bit bigger for deer hunting. Not saying that you cannot take a deer with it. I'd look at the 6.5-47L or a 284.

The 7 BR is pretty hard to beat (15" bbl") for deer, (less powder than the 6.5 L case and very accurate). I also have/use 6.5x47 (6.5x222rem mag) and the 6.5 IHMSA (basically the 6.5 L just way earlier). I will add that IME the better bullets to use are the old standby SP's. The lower vels in the shorter bbl/SP's are better combo than some of the higher end bullets that need higher velocity to expand properly.

Howdy !

A .250 Savage makes for a great dual-role' cartridge, and fits the bill for game up to & including
deer. It's great on varmints ! You can make brass by simple neck-up of .22-250 to .250" calibre.

.35 Rem is another well-proven round for an XP. Metallic sillhoutte shooting is but one venue where
.35 Rem has shown great accuracy. It's also a great choice for shooting cast bullets, and one can then of course..... " role his own ". Existing .35 Rem barrel for the XP are out there.

I shoot a:
- 25BR XP-100
- 7BR Striker
- 30BR Custom Savage Pistol
All very fun, low recoil and deadly accurate. If you don't want to spend lots of time creating brass the 7BR is my pick for accuracy out to 400 yards and will take any white tail you find.
