Caliper recommendations

Guys I am looking at upgrading my Franklin arsenal digital calipers. They are getting a bit old and figured it was time. What would you recommend...brand and model. Looking at spending about 100$ plus or minus 25$. Thanks in advance

I did same thing two years ago. FA were ok. But batteries kept dying and got to point where I was doubting my readings. I went on ebay and got two pairs of Brown and Sharpe Dial calipers at a steal and love them. Very smooth and accurate/repeatable.

Check Ebay out. Be sure to look closely at pics and read item description.

Or could get a Mitutoyo Digital model for close to what you are looking to spend if you get them on ebay

The Mitutoyo "Absolute" digital calipers are in your price range. They are super smooth. They convert from standard to metric and are easily zeroed. That feature comes in handy if you're using the Hornady comparator, etc.

The lower priced Mitutoyo dial calipers are made in Brazil. The Mitutoyo dial calipers that are made in Japan are slightly more expensive.

I use both all of the time and have no complaints.

I prefer to purchase calipers and indicators new so as to know they haven't been dropped, etc.

I've been sticking with my starret 120A. No batteries required, but then I upgraded to these years ago and have a backup vernier...

Mitutoyo, either digital or dial,
Brown and Sharpe Dial
Use-enco has 25% off today only , enter LUCKY25 at checkout. Should be able to get them for less than 100$ today.

Thanks that's exactly what I was looking for. I was looking hard at the brown and sharpe and I am know considering an 8" vs. the 6".

No matter which calipers you get you will always have to have a way to double check its working properly, so make sure you get a pin gauge. You can also use it to verify you concentricity gauge. Erik Cortina thought me this trick and for $3 its well worth it.

I have Mitutoyo calipers, but I've found that the Harbor Freight ones work just as well for a lot less. I would advise to get the 8 inch ones instead of the 6 inch. The extra 2 inches make a difference when measuring head space. The 8 inch one cost $30 ;) at the Harbor Freight store near my house. YMMV.

Kindest regards,

Joe
Joe, thanks for the heads up on the pin vice. This is something I never even considered. I am goin to order one.

This video helped me decide on a caliper: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yqZx_FNbSs / I purchased the 6” IP54 EZ Cal Super Large LCD display digital caliper shown here: http://www.igaging.com/page19.html from ebay. Works great for me.

Guys, just wanted to thank you for your input. I ened up getting the brown and sharpe. I will use my Frankfurt arsenal caliper as a back up.

The pin gages are a good thing to have on hand. I have a .125, .250, .375 and .500. Really takes the guesswork out of, well, guessing..........

I just bought a $65 digital mic from Amazon that is perfect. You can calibrate any of your tools with them, so the cost per gets even lower. Mighty little money well spent. They are a good check, regardless of your brand.

And Brown & Sharpe ain't shabby......good choice.
