Caliber ??

I have a custom built rifle a .22x243 Middlestead. It's got a Lilja barrel, McMillan stock, Jewell trigger, Mod. 700 action.

Was talking with my smith about maybe getting a new rifle from him and he threw the switch barrel idea at me.

I'm leaning towards doing it but can't make up my mind which caliber to go with.
.284
6.5X284
6X284

Most of you guys got way more experience than me. Which would give me the best LR performance? Any other calibers that would work on the 700SA?

Thanks,
Chuck

6.5/284 is great long distance but a real bbl burner,6/284 is even worse,on a short action u cant remove a loaded round w/o removing the bolt, never tried the .284,myself i went with a .260 improved on a short action, isn't done yet but it's supposed to do well out to 1000 yds, might consider a br wildcat like the brx or a dasher also

I will go with 260 Rem match chamber, 0.295 neck, 0.471 base and throat for 2.912 oal ) to allow powder room in case and avoid deep seating long bullet

if you go to 284 WIN avoid factory SAAMI chamber that was design for semi auto hunting rifle, but with some modification 284 WIN with 162 AMAX is a great cartridge

good shooting

Why not take a look at article on Ric Horst's 7wsm it just might be the next king of the hill at 1000 yard shooting take a look at Lost River J40 162gr a high BC of 778

I sure like the looks of the new 6.5x47 Lapua.
Of course everything is a compromise,do you plan on a lot of shooting or do you wan't a real hotty that won't last too long
for those super long shots at a slower pace.I often look at what Lapua offers for brass first and then go from there.
I think the 260AI is a heck of a good size case for 1000yd shots. You good also use .308 Lapua cases in it too.
