caliber suggestions

I have a 26 1/2"x 8 twist Douglass barrel in a 6BR for a Savage, it has 2600 rounds thru is and been taken care of properly, but the 107MK no langer will touch the lands, so rather than scrap it, I want ro rechamber it into a caliber with a longer case so I don't have to do any threading to the barrel, I had a 243 in mind or a 243AI, any other suggestions that might be an optimum choice accurate long range varmint rifle with this barrel lenght.

thanks
Chet

The perfect calibre in 6mm i now believe is the 6X47 Lapua we have chambered 3 and they are just awsome 41.5gr H4831SC behind a 107gr Sierra and 1 hole groups at 200 yards. We are also using 39.1gr H4831SC with a 115gr Berger and results are nearly as good

Are dies and brass available in the US, what is the lenght os the case. and what are the velocities with those charges.

Chet,

You may want to check, but i thing the 6 BR is larger it hte shoulder than the 243 AI. I tried the rechamber a 6BR to a 6 AI, and had to cut the 6BR chamber off then rechamber. I would just have it set back to the Br chamber.

the 6X47 Lapua and 6mmBR have the same shoulder dimentions so the barrel can just be rechambered without re cutting the threads

Chet, before you do anything, you should pull the barrel and examine the throat. Often the lands are wiped out for several inches in front of the case mouth. IF the reamer pilot does not have full contact in the bore with the lands, the chamber may end up egg shaped, result will be full lenght sizing after every firing...worst case.

If you have enough "straight" on the barrel, I would at least cut the threads off and re-chamber in the very least.

If you do not have a lot of Straight on your barrel, then cut off two threads and chamber for a 243 AI or 244 AI, they are great cartridges. I have a custom 243 on a #6 taper, along with 243 AI's. You sure do have to trim the cases and full length size the std 243 often compared to NEVER on the 243 AI. The 244 AI is good for an extra 100-150 fps over the 243 AI depending on the barrel.

When I was shooting a lot of P. dogs with the unturned blanks in 243 AI, I set back my chamber every 1800 rounds and cut off an inch to 1 1/2" to get into "fresh" meat in the barrel. I would get at least 4 chambers on an unturned blank that started off at 29-30" and the last chamber would be a 6 br or a 6 PPC.

When you wait too long to re-chamber, you often have to cut off quite a bit of the barrel...it's best not to wait too long.

A good gunsmith will have a set of graduated pilots that are ground in 0.0002 increments for each caliber, so that he
can match the pilot to the correct bore dia.
