Caldwell Rock upgrade top?

Has anyone upgraded the top on the Caldwell Rock to a windage top? I have this rest and the base is nice and heavy but the top leaves little to be desired.

I put a windage adjustable top on mine, from Dan Greenlaw Machining, Orrington, ME. It operates very smoothly and traverses back and forth across a USBR target, with room to spare.

Are you fellas refering to the 'rock' or the 'competition rock"? I use the 'rock' and it could use a windage top,but I do not know which top is combatible.

David how did you put on the Farley top?
Did you just take the screw out of the top of the post holding the current top and screw the Farley back down?
I have been considering doing this with the shadetree.

I did. Those tops on the Caldwells are crap (for competitions). They are fine for just plinking with the huting rifles or .22's. I bought a custom top made by a fellow poster here on this site. xpfuzz is his log on. His name is Cayle Davis. Incredible top. He helped me get it just exactly as I wanted it.

Here is a pic of it on top of my Caldwell base. It's set up for left handed shooter, so you can not see the windage knobs.

Oh by the way... he also made me the knobs for the feet and the rest. MUCH easier to turn that the plastic ones that come with the Caldwell. If you do not already have a Caldwell, it's cheaper to just buy his whole base with the top. But since I already had 2 caldwells, I just got his windage top.

I'm very happy with my Shadetree rest top (made by butchlambert on this site). Can be had with the proper post to fit the Caldwell base for no extra cost. Much more pleasant to use, and i like to think it has contributed materially to my slowly improving scores in F-class matches, along with the NF BR scope.

One other thing to consider when adding a top to the Caldwell base is the fact that the Caldwell is taller than most other bases. You may have to get a taller rear bag. You can't really see it in the picture above, but the bag I use is the tall Bumble Bee bag from Protecktor. You can see the elbow protector I use is actually a full sand bag since the gun sits up higher.

True. On the bench it's pretty high, unless I remove the mariner wheel and use just my Shadetree top, or put a spacer or two under the rear bag, depending on the gun.

Though for me, when shooting F-class, it works as an advantage. I also have the Sinclair extended leg screws on the two front legs, and only use the extra length to level the top on ground that slopes down away from me.

I have also seen someone use the base upside down to get it lower.

You said with the proper post...
Do you need to get a new post for the shade tree or can you just unscrew the caldwell top and attach the shade tree top to the caldwell post?

My Shadetree came with the appropriate post for the Caldwell base. Since there's the whole joystick mechanism at the bottom, it's more involved than merely unscrewing something to change posts.

Caldwell has used 3 post specs for the Rock BR post. If you do go with Shadetree Butch can help you figure out which one you have and supply accordingly.

Wes
is there any chance you are going to sell some extra windflags you dont need?

Sorry Ray, Those Hood flags actually belong to a freind of mine. I have been borrowing them until I can finally get a set of my own. I am buying some double vane flags from David Halbolm.
