Cabelas sucks find me a factory target rifle

I know that there are people that have spent many dollars to fix a poorly made rifle and then sold it for half of what they spent. I would go to a bench rest shoot and ask around for a good used rifle and start working on the right load for that gun. Don't buy the first one on the your first visit either as it may take time to find the best gun for the money.

The stock and all it's parts Made in china. Copy of Master Class Stock. There is not a Better Trigger ? The After Market Trigger are not as good as ones for Remington.

Oh , I did not know we were comparing Savage triggers and Savage aftermarket triggers to what you can purchase for a Remington. I thought the world already knew this....

about two months ago, the Cabelas in Gonzales LA had a shilen sleeved xp100 in .222 something with a 20x unertl scope in a benchrest stock. THey wanted $2200 I think? Could call and see if its still there, they will ship used guns for a small fee, that you get back if you buy it.

You can search all of the Cabelas Gun Libraries right here...

http://www.cabelas.com/browse.cmd?categoryId=103792680

If the link doesn't work, go to Cabelas main page, scroll down to the bottom where you'll find Shopping Resources. Right under that is Gun Library.

Click on it, and search to your heart's content.

By the way, looks like the one in Gonzales may have sold.

I love my Night Force 12-42 scope. Build your own "Target" rifle for your purpose. there are many different types of target shooting.

Thanks to all. I am overloaded looking at options etc.
Based on responses, follow up comments and questions.:
1- cps actions any good. That 243 at cabelas is ugly but if it shoots who cares.

2-General opinion is new 40x not what the old are. My old one shoots .25 all day no matter the conditions and when wind drops its better. 223 just doesn't carry the distance.
3-I am not an amature but not pro either. I did shoot for a while at 1000y competition with a 50cal but it got to be to far to drive and too costly. I love my old 40x for out to 300 but north dakota wind just sucks hence my push to 30 cal. I know 6.5 etc are better but it's what I like.
3 - 40x 2250 gone already so rebarrel oport unity gone.
4- 7.62 40x just seems high for old gun though it is of vintage where they were good shooters.
5 savage is ok but can they really compete.

+1 As hogpatrol says. I looked at this rifle probably a year ago. Factory bbl set back. Cabelas sales people say it was chambered by Walt Berger as "Berger " is marked on the barrel. I have seen barrels marked as this before and am quite confident work was done by Walt's brother, Nelson Berger. Without benefit of bore scoping, I would assume this rifle would likely need to be rebarreled(not a bad assumption when buying any used target rifle that one does not have personal knowledge of).

Nelson Berger chambered a barrel for me about 1980. It was marked Nelson Berger, not Berger. Nelson has always lived about 8 miles from Kelbly's range. He has retired from gun smithing for a while. Don't know how long.

Three pages in and, I'm a bit curious. Exactly what type of "benchrest" are you planning on shooting with a 308 ?

First off, what makes you think a NIB 40X is going to shoot well enough to be called a target rifle?
Remington can't find their a$$ right now, much less build a good product.
Second, I've had a Cabela's card for way more years than I can remember and I've used my points to buy all kinds of merchandise from them online. They have never once said "no you can't use points because blah blah is on sale; they even let me use points to cover shipping costs when applied.
Third, you will need an optic for whatever you get. Use your Cablea's points on a nice NF or such.
Lastly, I don't think Bob at Shooter's Corner takes Cabela's points and that, the way I read it, is the way the OP wants to purchase.

Today I went and used $213.56 of points on one of them Traeger wood pellet grills. Thank you very much!!

You boys might as well have a beer and popcorn party since the original post was a year ago and he hasn't even been on the site since Feb 1 of this year.....

Zombie threads are just that, dead but still alive. It's all part of the Zombie Apocalypse the gun industry keeps telling us to prepare for.

If your on a budget and can't afford to customize a action/rifle there's a few factory rifles that I've owned that shot amazingly well. I've had two Remington 5r 308s, one first generation VSSF, several Winchester heavy varmints that shot extremely well. The Winchester Heavy Varmints were made in the 90s out of Winchesters custom shop, they have Wilson barrels and HS precision stocks. They've shot the best out of the rifles I just mentioned but all of those rifle did a good job. You can find used 5Rs, VSSFs and Heavy Varmints most of the time on Gunbroker. It's pretty easy to tell if they've been shot a lot, HS stocks get shiny from being handle a lot on the grip and forearm, bolt wear on the blued rifles stands out too. You can expect to pay 700-1000 bucks and have a decent rifle. Like mentioned before I would sink my money into optics. If you have enough points for a 40x you have enough points for some good glass. Cabelas runs good glass in their bargain cave fairly often. They recently had Leupold Mark4s and vX6s deeply discounted. Nightforce NXS is a good way to go.

Look up Shooters Corner in N.J.
Bob has many great rifles and can have it shipped to your nearest FFL
shooters corner I bought a savage f12 tuned action 900.00 it is the smoothest savage I have ever closed a bolt on, lugs are square square, they have all kinds of 40x rifles at the corner
