bye bye 22-250 hello.308

Something else to be aware of when ordering barrels for Savages... there are 'large shank' and 'small shank' actions. The small ones take a barrel approx.,don't have the numbers in front of me) 1.065" dia, the large shank are more like 1.120" or something in that range. If you look on sharpshootersupply.com under 'technical' info, they show the difference and how to tell what yours is. A new Target action will be a large shank, as thats the only way they come. Some of the other 'models' may or may not be depending on what they started life as,i.e. chambered for a magnum, etc.) so if you have a used action you need to check before you order.

Build on a savage get rid of the remingtons, that's what I'm doing. All my savage's shoot very well all the way out to a thousand.308 tactical with 178 a-max's 43.7grs.of varget win. l.r. primers. 6cm 115 d-tac 49 grs. of h1000 cci br 2 at a thousand shoot great .Working on a 7mm rsaum right now, have others but my 6cm is my go to gun.Remington's for sale...

For an easily available, little-to-no wait barrel you might consider a Lothar Walther barrel from Spider Firearms. When I called them up, they had one on the shelf; had it in my hands within a week. Only one flavor, for .308) - stainless 24" factory varmint contour,1.055" @ breech, 0.840" @ muzzle), 1-10" twist. Seems to shoot pretty well so far. No problems w/ cleaning, etc. etc. Shoots 175gr SMK and 190gr Bergers w/ ease. Mine has a Badger Ord. FTE brake on it now to soak up a little bit of the thump from the 190s,and to get back at the guys I shoot next to who all seem to have brakes  ) but its not really necessary.

Shilen has a 10-12 wk wait last I heard, dunno what Midway or others keep in stock in terms of Shilen, Pac-Nor runs anywhere from 3-8 wks on the orders I've placed. The 24" LW tube will work fine, but if it is a dedicated F/TR rifle I'd say go for 28-30". If it's going to be used for *anything* else, I'd stick w/ 24-26" for usability.

Biglonnie Make it easy on yourself if your planning on spending 900$ on,REDOING) your Savage just buy a new Savage F/TR for 950$ in 6.5-284 or 308 and SMILE at everyone else

FWIW

I am a Palma High Master and have approx. 5 yrs in the bag, shooting with a sling and iron sights.

The 175gr bullets will stabilize in a 13 twist very well.

The most efficient twist rate for the 168gr Sierra's is a 14. The bullet was designed for 300Meter shooting and if you talk to people that truly KNOW, the 14 is your pony. The 155 class bullets are best stabilized in a 13 or 13.5 twist. Many will dispute this, but I have over 4881 of them down one bore, as well as many others in other rifles, and my 13.5 twist krieger will shoot RIDICULOUS groups at 1000yrds. If you would like to shoot some heavier bullets as well, a 12 twist would be a compromise. The 12 will slightly overspin a 155, and will slightly underspin a 190. I believe Berger recommend no slower than a 12 for their 190VLD.

I will say, there are many who shoot faster twists with some success, but they are anomalies to ballistic science.

I have had long discussion with several barrel makers, and for the most part, their collective opinion is that most people overtwist the 30 cal bullets.

Best of luck,
Robert

I'm a die hard Remmy fan!
BUT...I think Savage is taking over. They have listened to the consumer and delivered with the F class and F/TR.
My buddy has a Savage 308,heavy barrel, don't know the model) and I have a Remmy 700P 308...his shoots just as good as mine and was ALOT cheaper!!!!
Our skills are about the same, not excellent, but not terrible shooters) so I think this is a very good comparison.
I think Remington is about to price themselves out of the game. It seems like every USED Remmy is $500, no matter what condition its in!
I hate to say it, but I think I see a Savage in my future and the 6.5-284 is so nice!!!!
