BVSS-S in 22 Nosler

Just a short report here. Bought a used BVSS-S in 223 for the action and stock. Used the action and stock in a 223AI which shot very well (at least as good as I can shoot), but decided to use the barrel for a 223 Nosler build. Finally, after a looonnngg wait, I got my PTG reamer in and turned the BVSS barrel into a 22 Nosler. Set it back about .0.200" and chambered. My mistake in that I should have shot it as a 223 and see what it would do. Would bite me in the rear later, not doing it.

Been playing with loads, but no bueno on accuracy. Velocity wise, 3400+ with the 55Vmax and 3300 with the Hornady 62 gr BTHP from Midsouth and 3179 with the Nosler 70gr RDF.

About the best I could do was 1" groups, assuming all bullets made it to the target!!! Would get 1/2" core and a few flyers. Shot again today and had three in the 3's, then one sideways and two earlier shots not hitting the paper. Using 55gr Vmax in a 1-9" twist. Tried 60gr vmax, about inch group and then the last three at our 227 yd gong. First hit the ground at about 150 yds, second about 180yds and last hit the ground under the gong!!!! Tried TAC, Varget, 844 and H-380 with the heavier bullets

Driving me nuts, never had this happen before. Think I will re-crown it and see what happens. If no change, might use a 223 Rem new takeoff Remington barrel I have and modify it and chamber it and fit on the BVSS action.

What was really bad today, is that I was also shooting a rifle I put together by using a Savage action, Reminton 308 barrel and cutting/fitting it to work with the Savage action. Chambered in 7.62 x 39, durn thing with ball ammo was shooting about an inch @100 yds and not a whole lot bigger at 200m.:(

You need to look at the bore with a bore scope. Plan B - push some lead slugs down the bbl and see how it feels. On the x39, I asked over on arfcom if anybody was hotrodding their reloads in x39 bolt rifles. A 30PPC is a blown out x39 for all intents and purposes.

I am just ordering a barrel within the next day or two. I picked up a 22 nosler reamer here a bit ago. I've got a bolt gun in 223ai, couple ar's in 223and a few 22-250's. But a bug to build an ar upper in 22 nosler. Wondering if I should just skip the nosler or not. Keep us posted.

Are you running a single shot, blind mag or DBM? If DBM, what mag are you using?

I'll be following this one with some interest as I plan on building a 22Nosler bolt gun when my lathe skills are up to par.

Last report for now. Single shot action. The Savage barrel had a bad spot in it about 20" down the tube, so pulled it off and grabbed a Remington 223 rem barrel off the shelf and turned/threaded it to fit the savage action. The chambering is where I biffed. Had some chatter with the reamer, didn't seem like it wanted to cut very well, (2nd job) and it turned out not anywhere to my liking. Went to the range and tried some TAC and H-380 loads I had, but nothing spectacular. Pulled out some 55vmax and 28.5 Varget. First shot 1" low, second in center, third in center and 4,5 and 6 back 1" low, but a nice little group. Brass was coming out like it was fired in an HK fluted chamber, but not quite that bad. I am no gunsmith by any means or machinist, just know a bit, but never had a chamber come out like this, but I don't know how to cure the chatter thing. Used "Mississippi Mud" (MoS2) for lube (excellent machinist and gunsmith friend gave me some long ago to use)
. Tried to size the fired brass, alot tougher than the origional Savage barrel chamber and pulled off the rims in 4 out of 6 cases. rims seems thinner than the 223 Hornady brass I have, by about .004-.005"
I am done with the 22 Nosler for now. Gonna pull the barrel and stick with my 223AI. Probably will turn down a Douglas 7mm blank I have and make a 7mm TCU. Have the reamer, an unused action now and a barrel, might as well put it to use!!
"Swift4yotes"--- might check into WOA barrels for my AR!!

Rockrat, mine is a 12 twist. I actually am selling it to a buddy and just ordered a new one yesterday. The later barrels are built with a longer than rifle length gas system. They tell me its a 4 week wait.
