Buying unknown .45 handloads

I had an experiance once where I had a case head seperation in an AR from an "internet load". Not my gun not my load. I trust no one unless I watch the process which brings me to this. A friend offered 280rds hornady HPs and 160 hornady RN all vacuum sealed in 40rd packs with an ammo can and a dillion case gauge for $125. He used to shoot competition and all his equipment was Dillion and claims none is hot which really means nothing. Thats hard to resist but its not worth a $1400 kimber or my hand. Not counting the pull down time even the cost of a bullet puller would still be under component cost. What works best, the kenetic or press collets? Thanks. Since I have no one to learn from this site is a great help. Josh

Can tell you this. I got some 45 ACP ammo given to me. Got clips and went to shoot it in my S & W Governor 45LC/410. Loaded the stuff and had a giant brain fart. 1st shot did not go off, or so I thought. Then comes the brain fart since I was sure the first shot did not go off. I shot again.

This time there was a small feel and tiny bit of smoke. Two bullets jammed against each other in the barrel.

I know. I know. Luck the second one was defective also. Yes there was powder residue thrown out. No. The powder did not go off on either shot. Yes I am stupid and stupid beyond my decades of experience. Yes I was dumb lucky and on and on and on.

This just happened two weeks ago. Ammo you don't know is a mystery until you know or cannot "know" any more.

Tell him unless he has a Class 6 ffl, it's against the law to SELL reloads. If you can get them for free, pull, if not walk. It's not a good deal to start with.

I loaded my IPSC loads on a Lee progressive, one night I had something go wrong seating a bullet, didn't index, seated another and went on. Loaded close to 500 in that session......

The press didn't index, but the powder throw did it's job, x2, with Win231. Still have that split slide, and there may still be some minor scars on my face from the brass.

I have never pulled 45 with a collet puller, (but I pulled that entire lot above with an inertial puller), if there is a collet that will grab the bullets they are faster and easier than inertia pullers. I have and use both but I've only used the collet on long pointy rifle bullets.

I only shoot ammo, reloaded or not, made by people who have an 06 or 07 FFL and insurance. Or that I made myself.

Otherwise, I don't touch it.

so chances are a collet wont work on acp? I thought ot was still a decent deal for the componets minus the work to pull.

Collet will work, sometimes best to use seat die, push bullet in slightly to break the seal, most handgun loads are crimped. It can be job.

"Buying UNKNOWN reloads". To me it is totally crazy. I'd rather throw rocks.
Below are two links. The first is a quick read and the second a more detailed account. If you take a few minutes to read at least the first I would assume one would be say 'hesitant' to purchase, find, or pick up off the ground anything and then shoot it that is of unknown origin.

What is your time worth? My .02? Run, don't walk away from this "deal".
Shooting unknown reloads is akin to going down to the local Rock house for female "companionship". :(

Looks like $62 for the hollow point bullets +shipping. $10 for the can, $20 for the gauge, $14 worth of primers, $34 in the RN bullets. Powder would end up as fertilizer since it would be word of mouth, and what ever brass is worth. So its $140 plus brass value. I would only be coming out a few bucks ahead for a whole lot of labor.

It is kind of like sticking your hand into a bag of snakes. Maybe you will be bitten (mess up your firearm or worse) and maybe you won't.

I witnessed a buddy getting a face full of shrapnel with "buddy" reloads. At the second shot his 40 cal Glock blew to pieces. Amazingly, Glock replaced the gun even though they knew he was shooting reloads. Of course it's possible Glock gives special treatment to cops.

I only shoot two kinds of ammo. Either it's store bought or I personally loaded it. Period. I won't even shoot ammo loaded by the mentor who taught me how to reload!

To each his own, but some of you take this too far. I agree with rifle loads for one gun, not shot in another, but pistol ammo?

Made it easier to decide when you do some math, lol

Personally seen more pistols explode than rifles. Still, rifle, pistol, shotgun. I don't trust anyone else's loads.

I hope I didn't sound like I need to live on the edge, but if a friend is pulling ammo from a can and shooting it, I'll dip in and give him some help. Now someone random handing me ammo, no way.
If a guy trusts his handgun ammo, I'll shoot it.
