Burris Zee Insert Use

I have just put a rail on my Model 7 and now when I boresighted, I am out of verticle. I looked through my bag of tricks and have 4 inserts, 2 plus 10 and 2 -10. For the life of me I cannot remember how these inserts work but I know I corrected a scope last year when I ran out of windage by using a 20 insert on one end. For correcting vertical, do I need the split horizontal? Do you use both plus inserts on one ring and both minus on the other? Dumb but happy shooter, Tom ???

The plus and minus of a given number are used as a pair, +010 with -.010 in the same ring, etc. Yes your split should be horizontal. The +.010 is .010 thicker than a 0, and the -.010 is .010 thinner. by putting the plus on the bottom in back and/or on the top in front, you can lower the front of the scope. By doing the opposite, you can raise it. What exactly did you mean when you said you ran out of vertical? If you know how low the scope is pointing at a known distance, when its reticle has been centered, with 0 inserts all around, and you know the center to center dimension of the rings, a little ratio work will tell you what inserts to use.

Example = If you put the -.010 in bottom FRT ring with a +.010 on top and a +.010 in bottom RR ring with a -.010 on top with the correct ring spacing you now have the equivelent of a 20 MOA base. With Burris's other .020 inserts you can get up to 40 MOA.

Thanks guys. I had the plus rings together instead of a plus with a minus. Will change them around tomorrow and see if I gain my elevation back. I boresighted by eye and it looked like I had to have the elevation all the way to the bottom to be zeroed but I did not verify that at the range since I wanted to get the reticle closer to center. I had the same problem a year ago on windage on another rifle and I bought the insert set and it worked like a dream but for the life of me I could not remember which direction or how to pair them. Spring is in the air and it is time to start shooting some of the loads made over the winter! Tom

Well, I paired them up like they are supposed to be and walla, I am now boresighted with the reticle almost perfectly centered. Thanks for the help. Tom :)
