Burris XTR II Scopes

I'm interested too...if they didn't make them FFP I'd be interested in trying one but I think the center dot would get a little large for my liking. If I remember correctly the center dot is .125 MOA which would make that ~ .5 MOA dot @ 400y...I'm shooting at 2 1/4 inch clays and I don't think I could work with a dot that covered a 1/4 of the clay. I love the idea of the .5 MOA hashes for wind holds though.

I'd like to see one at a range before I made my decision...

In a ffp scope a .125 moa dot will always be a .125 moa dot, regardless of magnification. This is because the dot AND the target get magnified to the same degree making the size ratio of the reticle and target constant regardless of magnification. A sfp reticle, the reticle stays the same even when magnification goes up, essentially making the reticle appear smaller compared to the target at higher magnification (reticles covers less of the target.

I have a FFP Viper Vortex and as I increase magnification the crosshairs get thicker and center aim point gets wider/taller. On my SFP they always remain the same size.

So how am I thinking wrong? Not trying to be confrontational or smart donkey, trying to learn. I love the .5 moa hashes and would love to give this a whirl but I was thinking the crosshairs and center dot would get to large. Am I over thinking?

Thanks and sorry to jack the thread a bit...maybe someone will give us a review.

You are right, in a FFP the reticle does get larger and thicker as the magnification goes up... But so does the target. So, the reticle always covers the same amount of the target. In a FFP scope a .5 moa line in the reticle is always .5 moa regardless of magnification. In a SFP scope the reticle stays the same, and the target gets larger as you increase magnification. So as you increase magnification, the reticle covers less of the target. So a .5 moa line in the reticle of a SFP scope might be .5 moa at lower magnification and .125 moa at higher magnification. I hope that makes it more clear.
I had the chance to look through one of the Burris 8-40x scopes at a LR match earlier tis year. I was really interested in them and someone was shooting one there. I too had concerns about the thickness of the reticle. I was really impressed looking through the scope. Great clarity, good resolution, and the reticle was not too heavy. The floating crosshair was plenty fine for precise holds. While the reticle is busier than I usually like on a target scope it was not distracting, or obtrusive.

I think we're saying the same thing just two different ways.

A 400y...~ 4" is 1 MOA....if the dot is .125 then at 400y the dot is going to appear (4"*.125) to be .5". I'm thinking that will cover 1/4 of my clay...not sure I can do that.

Is my math right and I'm thinking straight? Now I'm starting to question if I know what the heck I'm thinking ;D

I do understand the hashes will still be .5 MOA increments which at 400y is ~ 2"...this I really like for wind holds...I can almost lay a clay between the hash marks and I can see some big time advantages with this. My only issue is the dot size.

Yup sounds like we are. .125 moa is .5" at 400yds. I use a ,125 moa dot reticle in my sightron for LR FTR and I don't have an issue aiming precisely with it. At 1000yds the dot only cover 1.25 inches. Find someone with a .125 dot reticle at you next clay match and see if they will let you look through it. I think you'll be surprised by how much there is left to see around the dot.

That is exactly what I need to do...you've helped and really got me thinking I should just try one of these scopes and see what happens. The fact it's .5 moa wind holds throughout all distances (being FFP) is pretty cool.

Thanks!
