Bullets

Hi I have a couple of questions one … I am starting to reload and I want one bullet for whitetail to elk and everything in between that North American has to offer except brown bear … I am useing a 130 grain bullet out of my 270 I am comfortable shoot 300 and that will be my max … I just don’t know what I should use either the 130 interlock or the sst by hornady.. I would like to hear from guys who have had experience with these rounds and any stories of wieght retention.my shot placement is always behind the front leg..I know thier is better bullets out thier but I want to stick with cup and core bullets I have killed many deer with core lokt a and I know a few guys who shot elk with these kind of bullets

Use a bonded bullet, whichever shoots best. I use Hornady, Swift, Nosler and Woodleigh. Yes Nosler Partions work too, but a bonded is always my 1st choice. In 270 I'm using the Horn. 150 Interbond and N-165

In my experience Nosler Partitions work best. I've been shooting them for many years, deer, elk and antelope, nothing walks away. I'm sure there are other bullets that work well, lots of changes in 60 years, but I'm not familiar with them and have never used them. I can't get up the mountain any more, but if I could, I'd still use Nosler Partitions in my 25-06, 270 or 300 WinMag.

I've used a 270W for about 50 yrs and have handloaded all that time. Bought both my sons 270's when they started hunting. I have taken probably close to 25 elk bulls and cows, both my sons have also about 6-8 elk taken each. All three of us have taken numerous deer.

Like you I wanted one load for both deer and elk and tried the Nosler partition 150 gr using either 53 grs of IMR4831 or 55 grs of H4831. My loads shoot well in all three rifles.

When Nosler came out with the 140 gr ballistic tip I tried that for deer one season. Shot 2 bucks with that load and while it definitely killed them in their tracks it made an absolute mess when exploding on the shoulder and peppering the insides with shrapnel. The partition almost always punches through with the controlled expansion. Anyway I havent used anything but the 150 partition from that day forward.

My last bull was shot at 324 yds and the partition exited, bull fell in its tracks.

Barnes TTSX. It will not only probably do an "as good or better" better job on Elk-sized critters, but it can legally be used in the states which require lead-free - and that list is growing. That they tend to be very accurate doesn't hurt.
