bullets for 9 twist 223

i know this has been kicked around alot..some say this so say that.
i just go 4 box of 55 gr v max gave to me..have read about fantastic
groups..to me i want fantastic groups out to 300 yards..like 1 1/2 inch
to me 1 inch 3 shots at 100 aint nothing..show me at 300 yards..

so lets hear your replys on this..i kknow the wind will effect it but you
learn to deal with it..what powder is being used for your excellent
groups? i use max load of imr4320 with the 69 gr smk..shoot fairly
well..but i need to get these 55s to work if possible..tried 53s once
at 250 yards and looked like a scatter gun...thanks for any and all info..john :o

try some 70gr bergers. in 4 guns they shoot light out! all loads are with varget. one rifle holds range record of 5 shots into 4.89 at 900 yds.

I run 55g vmax in front of w748 in my 1/9 tw rigs and at 400 yards I average 2" which I cant cry about since its just p-dogs & coyotes I shoot. 55vmax at 700 yards was running 5.5".

I appreciate your replies..I guess only a couple understood the question.

I was asking about how the 55 gr bulllets woulld work in the 9 twist..

So far I have not been able to prove it for myself..I will try the 748 and

see how it works for me..I know lots of guys claim outstanding groups with

them in the 9 twist..Sort of like the Hornady 68 gr bullets. So sy they work great..

Others say not..I have shot them the 68 at 300 with a fair grouping, but nothing

under 2 1/2 inch so far..The 69 gr SMK work great for me with an average of

around 1 to 1 1/2 inch at 300 if I am having a non shakey day..The older I get

the harder to hold still..Thanks again you guys..John

MY SAVAGE 9 TWIST LOVES 68GR BTHP MATCH HORNADY'S W/H-4895 450'S PRIMERS I'VE SHOT SOME 300YDS GROUPS THAT MEASURED .750 3 SHOTS NOT BAD FOR FACTORY RIFLE AND A LITTLE TINKERING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also wish I could get lighter bullets to shoot well in my Howa 1500 bolt gun, 1:9 twist.

The best I've done so far with 55gr Blitz Kings is a 5 shot MOA of .399 with an average MOA of .615 shooting at 100 yards from a bench using both IMR 8208 XBR and H-335 at various loads. All my data is based on 5 shot groups. Three shot groups are naturally much better but IMHO much less meaningful except for bragging at the bar.

If I shoot 68gr or 69gr bullets using my best recipes, I average less than 1/2 MOA and not infrequently shoot MOAs in the .3's and once in a while down in the .2's.

But I just can't seem to get anything 55gr or lighter to work well. I've got a couple of different powders on the way which are more suitable (they say) for lighter bullets. Perhaps that will help me find a good recipe for light bullets.

I'm also working on finding a compromise between seating long bullets close to the rifling without having too little neck engagement. That's no problem with most of my heavier bullets but I'm still searching for the best solution for seating depth using lighter (shorter) bullets. By the way, if anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears. I suspect I'm seating too long and I should accept a greater bullet jump in favor of more neck engagement; but like most things having to do with reloading, I'm not sure. I hope I live to be 150 so I can finish at least half the testing I have planned.

55's and 9 tw. are great together. Best powders in various guns I have worked up were IMR8208XBR, Reloader 7, Accurate LT32, W748. This is the order in which I would try them, based on how well they shot in the most guns tried in. If you just find unhappiness with the 55, try a 50 or 52. They often work even better.

25.5gr of WW748, RP7.5 or F205 primers, WCC or LC brass has been a GO TO load for my brother's SavageM10FP 1:9 twist for 15 yrs, mine liked 26 gr. of 748 in RP nickel and less than 1"@200 is norm. Don't have chrono data on that load. I switched to 40gr vmax w/RL10 abt 10 yrs ago and haven't used many 55 gr. since.
A 9 twist Savage bbl will shoot 55, 60 gr Vmax, 68 match, & 75 amax quite well with WW748. As said, not highest velocity, but accuracy is sure there and it meters well. My 60 vmax 748 load is at a slow 2770 fps, but is deadly on pd's.
Lighter 40's shoot just as well in a 9 twist with either RL10 @ 3500+fps in 24" bbl or Xterminator @ 3400+fps out of 20" bbl. Haven't used the tween loads lately, mostly 40 vmax, 60 vmax, or 68 match. With the 68 match, IMR 8208 is faster and a bit more accurate than 748, like it was made for it.

any idea of approximate charge weights or velocities?
