Bullets and BC to Hit Hard (Maybe we need to rethink)

I have been shooting prairie dogs for years. At least for these targets, I have yet to see explosive terminal ballistics at extended range with heavy-for-caliber bullets. Regardless of bullet construction. Absulutely true that high BC projectiles have some windage/trajectory advantage as distances stretch out, but “splody”? Nope.

And as already stated, those high sectional density bullets do seem to skip across the prairie more frequently (actually have that phenomenon recorded on digital camera).

And again, as previously noted, all these bragging rights shots at 1000 yards fail to mention how many mortar rounds were lobbed out before lucking into a hit. In the meantime bullets are whizzing over the horizon.

We used to use the word "thwok" when we were doing the onomatopoeia thing to describe the sound of the varmint going splody. Those Vmax and Zmax bullets made a lot of "thwok" noises no matter the twist or the speed.

Splody is horseshit to me. I've seen enough of that on men to last a lifetime, clean kills, safe shooting, that's what's important.

If you're not in a theater of combat and you're pushing out 4 or 5 rounds to splody a varmint accidentally at long range do your neighbors a favor stick to the range.

I hate to make judgments fro photographs as I do image editing for a living but from what I see, there's 3 significantly different bullet structures.

Only thing I see is that the vmax has a larger poly tip base. Other than that the bullets are put together the same. I could see with the larger diameter poly tip the hollow point is larger.

I'm actually not talking about grenading pdogs. That would be bonus if the bullet expanded that well. I want a violent enough expansion to kill them dead instantly. Not poke holes.

The truth is that the meaning of the thread is getting lost. The problem that needs to be looked at is the bullets slowing down.

Or not. Whatever. It is just up for discussion.

Great pics, Bradley.

The open cavity behind the poly tip maybe very different, did you not section any 60 V max? We all know that the 60's open up very well, the 75's opening up violently is in question, in my mind.

In the picture of the 75, there is practically no open space behind the poly tip..

Take a look at the 52 Amax, no open space behind the poly tip, so expansion on that bullet will be slower.

Now look at that BIG gaping hole behind the poly tip on the 50g V max! Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!

Also, check out that wide poly tip design 50g vs a simple straight plunger design on the others.

Explosive is not just because guys want to see varmints explode, its because a varmints vitals are tiny and an explosive bullet is the best way to ensure a clean kill without suffering. You can hit them almost anywhere with an explosive bullet and they die fast. I do not like seeing any animal suffer. Out to about 300 yds I like the light bullets driven fast and over twisted. Past 300 with our wind has a low hit percentage so I usually dont go for that, given the need for a heavier bullet thats not going to perform how I want.

I solve the problem by taking multiple rifles! I launch 40Vmax in a 1-10 .204 at 3800 and get instant kills out to 500yds. Probably 98% of my shots have been under 350 yds. "IF" I want to shoot out past 500yds I will grab my 6CM.
