I have been shooting prairie dogs for years. At least for these targets, I have yet to see explosive terminal ballistics at extended range with heavy-for-caliber bullets. Regardless of bullet construction. Absulutely true that high BC projectiles have some windage/trajectory advantage as distances stretch out, but “splody”? Nope.
And as already stated, those high sectional density bullets do seem to skip across the prairie more frequently (actually have that phenomenon recorded on digital camera).
And again, as previously noted, all these bragging rights shots at 1000 yards fail to mention how many mortar rounds were lobbed out before lucking into a hit. In the meantime bullets are whizzing over the horizon.
