bullet stuck in barrel

my son shot his 22lr and one shot didn't sound right so he checked and sure enough couldn't see through the bore
thank God he checked instead of shooting again
now we have to remove the bullet
Ive heard of 2 ways
one is to simply remove the bullet from another round -leaving just the powder and shoot it out -
the other is a brass rod and a hammer
has any one here ever tried the shooting method ?
I cant see why it wouldn't work

I can't provide any technical reason but shooting it out doesn't sound like a good idea. I'd go with the brass rod method.

There are some really good videos on youtube.com shooting out stuck bullets without damaging the barrel or shooter. Basically he was filling the barrel to the chamber with water, reduced charge in case with a wax sealer. Pops them right out. No reason a brass rod can't tap out a lead bullet though. The problem with pulling a bullet & firing it is you create an explosion instead of a burn because of the air space.

Just in case there are more than one slug in the barrel don't try to shoot it free. Take it to a reputable gunsmith, or remove it your self by drilling it out with a piloted drill and driving the residue out with a aluminum or brass rod.

If your going to shoot it out, I hope your insurance is paid up, and your son is not close by !!!!!!!!!!!

Shooting it out will work fine if it isn't stuck. If it is stuck then shooting it out will over pressurize the barrel just like shooting another bullet down the barrel.

don't even think about it.

If you try to drive it out yourself, and you value the barrel and it's accuracy, plan carefully, take time to prepare the tooling. Put the barrel in a vise. Have a plan to protect the rifling. etc.

Or enlist the help of a professional. Since the AR15 craze I've worked with a lot of relative novices who were smart enough to bring it to me to fix it.

Many years ago I had a bullet in the bore of a rifle that was given to me. I made a set up (a long wooden dowel with a small drill bit epoxied into it's center) to drill a hole through the center of the bullet, then used a wooden dowel and a hammer to tap the rest of the projectile out of the bore. Before drilling, it was stuck so tight that hammering on it went nowhere and may have made things worse. After drilling the center out, I was able to tap it right out.

BTW - - if the projectile is down the barrel a ways, it seems to me trying to shoot it out with a cartridge (i.e. the cartridge projectile removed) might be an exercise in futility and possibly result in a lot of gas blowback through the action. With the projectile stuck farther down the barrel, it seems to me pressures would build so slow because of the big space between the chamber and the projectile that the brass case might not seal off the chamber and not only would pressures possibly not reach to point that the stuck projectile might not leave the bore, but you might get a face full of gas. Seems like a bad idea to me to try to shoot the projectile out.

How far down the barrel is . What type of gun . Larry

Smart SON! Don't know that most young shooters would check that!

I would try a wooden dowel. IF that didn't work then i would try the epoxy of a bit into a clean rod and then protect the bore with some tape spaced on the rod. (heat shrink tube would work also)

Very simple to get the bullet out depending on the action and where the bullet is. A brass rod will only expand the bullet . Best way is put some heavy oil in the barrel and us the brass rod and a hammer.
Add about 2'' oil over the bullet and brass rod that fits down the barrel ease the rod down till it hit the oil and hit the rod firmly with a hammer. the oil will hydraulic the bullet out. It works with jacketed bullets also. Larry

I echo the remarks of the more experienced and wiser gentlemen above.

Please tell your son how he did the right thing and how proud you are of him!

its a savage mkii -don't know how far it went into the barrel
but he is bringing it to me later this week -Ill keep us all posted
on how far and how we remove it -thanks for all the good reply's

by the way -my boys are 25 and 29
they have been shooting since they were 3 or 4
I have taught my boys from the very beginning to listen for shots that sound different
then check the bore
this is the first time it has occurred
but it finally paid off

Most of the time the bullet is not into the barrel very far. Take a cleaning rod from muzzle end, pull it about 12" from bullet and let it drop to the bullet, if it does come out after a few time, go a little higher up. I use a Dewey one peice without a jag. If that does not work take to gunsmith.

That sounds like an excellent plan. I tried to remove one myself one time and it didn't go well.....this sounds like it would work very well.
