Stuck bullet HELP!!!!!

Hello all

I have a buddy who bought a Winchester 30-30 and it came with some reloads. I told him not to shoot the reloads and that we would take them apart and load them again so we knew what was in there.

Well being the impatient type he went and tried one. Only to find out that it didn't have any/very little powder in the case and now he has a bullet stuck in the bore.

To make matters worse he took a wooden dowel rod and tried to drive the bullet out. The bullet went up into the dowel and then the dowel broke off. He then tried a brass rod but it only drives into and splinters the end of the piece of dowel stuck over the bullet.

So for my question.

How would we get the dowel and bullet out without wrecking the barrel ?

I have found that it is easier to get a stuck bullet out when I squirt some oil into the barrel from the breech end and let it soak for a bit muzzle down. I don't know if the oil will lubricate your friend's bullet enough to allow driving it out with all the stuff already in the barrel with it or not. It is much easier to punch the bullet out if you don't have other stuff on top of it.

If the dowel is not broken off too deep in the barrel, you might try inserting a plastic guide into the barrel on top of the dowel and running a long screw into the dowel. Hopefully, you could then pull the dowel out. A drywall anchor of the correct outer diameter would work as your guide. If you don't use a guide, the screw will not stay centered in the dowel. Be careful with your crown. It doesn't take much to damage it.

A gunsmith is good advice.

I tried a wooden dowel once with similar results. Getting the dowel out so that I could get to the bullet directly was a chore. I put a few marks in the barrel before all was said and done. I never told my buddy what I did to his barrel. He hasn't said anything and his pistol still shoots well so I guess there wasn't any harm done. I now use an aluminum rod that is close to bore diameter and the oil. It works very well.

I have a stuck bullet remover. I consists of a set of round guides and 3 drill bits that are about 24" long, and 3 different 32" pieces of all thread They are very hard, Simply drop correct size bushing on top of stuck bullet-lower drill bit inside the guide- drill through the stuck bullet-insert all thread with the nut like stop in the hole pushing the other end of the all thread out the end of the barrel-put a brass washer (supplyed with kit) screw nut on all thread and tighten. It will pull almost any stuck bullet. Hope this helps

What ever you do, don't try to shoot the bullet out with a "starting" load of powder. A guy I knew (not a friend) had a similar occurance and loaded an empty case with primer & powder only. Holding the muzzle vertical, he loaded the rifle and fired.

Well, you can probably figure out what happened. The stuck bullet acted like a bore obstruction, and he managed to "ring" the barrel. Bad move! :(

Drilling the bullet out until the jacket can collapse enought to be push the rest out. Then you should clean and then lapp the barrel to remove any excessive tool marks and trash. Then clean with brushand good solvent.

Thanks for all the comments guys.

I'm not sure which way he wants to go. I think the drilling and a bigger hammer might do the trick.

At the very least he learned a lesson.

Thanks
Brian

I'll report back when he/we get it fixed.

I would try this:
Fill the bore with some motor oil to within 3/4" of the muzzle.
Make up a snug fitting dowel, wood, alum, or brass, then tap on the dowel with a suitable size mallot.
Good luck, might be a little messy!

Do what Nat says. I would try removing the dowel with a muzzleloader bullet puller attached to a black powder cleaning rod- it has a pointed coarse thread meant to screw into soft materials.
