Bullet sorting

If you sort today’s 6mm Berger 105 gn VLD Hunting bullets with a Bob Green comparator, does the lot number really matter at 500-1000 yds? If yes, why?

Bob's tool sorts bullets on the basis of the distance between the point where the seater stem contacts the bullet and approximately where the bullet will first contact the lands. It primarily allows for more consistent seating depth. It does not necessarily sort other dimensional aspects of the bullet such as base-to-ogive, OAL, nose length, etc., that may contribute to variance in internal/external ballistics. Bullets vary dimensionally from Lot-to-Lot, or even within the same Lot. In my hands, bullet dimensional variances are more often than not greater between different Lots than they seem to be within a single Lot, but even that is not written in stone. Unless you're sorting bullets by some additional dimensional aspect(s), the use of Bob's tool alone may not account for other dimensional variance within the bullets you're using, depending on the type and amount.

Absolutely keep them separate. Different lots still mean different jackets, dies used, and variations in other measurements that the Bob Green tool does not measure, such as bullet diameter and bearing surface length.

**I made that mistake once, never again.

If you are attempting to sort out flyers here for what its worth is what I do.
1) weight sort
2) Juenke
3) Bob G
4) optional point if needed
5) Feed them thru a bushing
6) If pointed recheck #'s 2,3 and 5
