Bullet sorting ?s

The last set of Davidson Bullet comparators I bought was $21 for the two of them (set). They work good if you have a dummy bullet to set them up each time you install on your caliper jaws. The one Accuracy One and Mark King sell work even better. With the Davisons' comparators you can also check ogive to base w/ one comparator.

Two Sinclair nuts can be used but a little awkward since there is no depth in the specific holes which lets the bullet tilt a little off balance but will work. The nut can be mounted and work a lot better though.

The Sinclair nut is made to check seating depth, not intended to measure bearing surface. They do not work because they engrave the bullet with out much force, you can get any kind of reading you want. They will not give the accurate reading of a indicator under it's consistent spring pressure setting on a surface block....... jim

Yes they do engrave the bullet Jim. They work better on base of cartridge case to ogive especially if the nut is mounted which only takes a shoulder screw turned to a press fit w/ a relief hole drilled thru to clear the bullet nose and mount the whole thing to a 3/8" plate then use thin steel and shim stock to rest body of case on 1/2 heighth of the maximum case diameter. Then place a brass screw on side squared-up to hold calipers parallel w/ the cartridge. Works like a charm, I've been using one for 30+ years.

Dan, i just made something else with one of my old Tubb BSC. I bored the part that attaches to the indicators the nose of the bullet can not bottom out and re attached it to the indicator but i use it now to check seating depth. Man is that the cats a$$, way more accurate than the dial caliper and the nut or the Davison set up,it gets rid of the weak link....... me......... jim

Why not sort some bullets, shoot several strings with bullets that are the same and then shoot several strings that have bullets that are at the extremes as far as your measurements go.
Because at least 50% of shooters would get smaller groups from the extreme bullets and the other 49.99% of shooters aren't good enough to tell the difference without a machine rest! ;D

I fit the description for a shooter not good enough to tell the difference. I will say though, that crossing the t's and dotting the i's in my hand loading regimen, gives me additonal confidence on the line. I firmly believe confidence is essential. If the bullet doesn't land where it should have, I don't have to wonder about my ammo. I want the best ammo that I can build when I squeeze the trigger.

I think most competitors try to get the most consistent bullets selected for matches, not necessarily perfect because you'd have half full boxes laying around everywhere.

Some write it off as a waist of time and money or they don't see any difference. I for one know it works, i trim and point so i will continue to do it. What it boils down to is, which side of the line do you want to end up on..... a 10 or a 9....... jim

personaly id go with length...base to ogive.

And when you get that done, weigh them. I watched a team from Australia at the Super Shoot two years ago doing that at the loading bench.
I do believe though, that measuring to the ogive as mentioned above, is much more critical.
