Bullet sorting questions

Recently stopped sorting but point my Berger 6mm 105 Hybrids. I have the tools and was sorting into 8 different groups but can't see or measure any difference at the target. On the other hand, my reloading efforts are focused on the right combination of powder charge and primers, consistent necks and brass prep and seating depth.

Have been doing the testing over the chrono?

I've only been sorting for a few months, but I can tell the difference between sorted bullets and random bullets, not only on the target but on the data from the chrono. I can't use the chrono when shooting 600 and 1K, but lower SDs and ESs have been improving my scores. It could be that I'm just getting lucky with the wind.

Sorting will simply get rid of the handful of bullets with varying base-to-ogive, weight, or overall length that you will encounter and will be of significant difference to cull it out and use it as a fouler.

I do it partly because it is a feel good process and I do catch bullets that I would have otherwise not culled out.

Sort if you feel it's mandatory, or not. My blind tests have been conclusive, inconclusive, and even contradictory to 'common wisdom'. So after several decades of nitpickingly tight standards, I'm at the point of declaring my efforts essentially pointless.

Now I am not you, and I am not disparaging your efforts and/or views. I am just declaring a truce with inconsistency and Ma Nature.

For me, such nuances are moot.

Bearing surface measurements, plus trimming the Meplat is my 2 biggest personal pet peeves when sorting.

I friend shoots 107's straight out of the box in a BRX and usually tear's our behinds up. We still haven't figured this out.

He tells us all the time "quote": Don't waste your time on all that other "bull", learn how to shoot and spend your time pulling a trigger.

It works for him!

Re: Bullet sorting made easy

Ben, I will make this very easy for you. I shoot Jamie Eazors 106 gr, 6mm bullets in competition from 100 to 1000 yds. in various forms of competition and win and never sort these bullets. They are so consistent in both weight and measurements that sorting is a waste of time. They also have a great B.C..I have several friends who are winners at various national matches who have switched to his bullets and they all say they have never seen bullets of this consistency. Call him at E.P.S. bullets, 814-590-4383.Try them ;D and you will agree.

Sorting, pointing and tipping has improved my scores and when I've tested my preped bullets vs non preped ones I see a difference on the target (all positive).

The other day I did a bearing surface sort on 800 105 Hybrids. There was a .010 variance between them.

I don't particularly enjoy the sorting process so if it wasn't important I wouldn't be doing it.

Consistency in all things is imporatnt for us. I have some custom bullets on order. If they measure the same I'll shoot them without the prep work and see how they/I do.

Good Shooting.

dunraven,
Follow DennisH s friends advice first. Then , when you get really good at reading conditions, and become a hard holder start to do the processes like meplat uniforming and bullet tipping to get that little edge on the competition. By then you will be able to see if it makes a difference and is worth doing or not. Get your reloading basics down first and get a ton of range time !!!!
