As soon as the pressure ring passes through the sized area it will not hold. You can push it back with your fingers,you lost all neck tension. .0005 larger pressure ring and only .0005 spring back is 0……….. jim

I don't agree, Jim. I do this often. The brass will spring back that much and give good, consistent neck tension...assuming the brass isn't over annealed, of course.

Mike, i had this problem all year, I'm running a .0102 neck wall and they are properly annealed and the shank size is .2432 and the pressure ring is .2437 .0005 larger. I even changed to a larger reamer free bore diameter. If you seat them in it will pull the bullets. Spring back isn't enough to grip ahead of the pressure ring once it passes through. I turned new brass never fired in the parent case and they won't hold.
What bullet are you using that the pressure ring is .0005 larger than the shank and what neck wall thickness are you using? If i switch to a BIB104 it will hold but they are not VLDs and the pressure ring is only .0002 larger……….. jim

Jim, ,specifically, I've done this with 30 cal BIB 118 gr flatbase bullets with a .3086 pr., but do it with others with different respective pr's as well.


I won't argue with what works for you, but this works fine for me.

What is the shank size? what is the neck wall thickness and it is a 30 and a lot more area than a 6mm and i bet you are running about .005 neck tension…….. jim

Necks do spring back after annealing .0005 but if the pressure ring is .0005 larger than the shank they will not hold ahead of the pressure ring. You can not seat past the sized area………. jim

If this happens, i would guess your not using enough neck tension to start with. Use a .001" smaller bushing, and i bet bullets will hold ahead of the pressure ring when seated deep. I have done it with a .0008" pressure ring.

Don't believe that for one minute. First it doesn't shoot with over .003 NT. and it shoots better with .002. Most people have never had this issue. I didn't have this problem with the Bergers last year .001 NT. would hold them .010 in and you could open the bolt the pressure ring was only .002-.003 so spring back would hold them. .0005 is like putting a oversize mandrel down the neck and with .0005 spring back you end up with zero neck tension. With more Neck tension makes it harder to start the bullet and you still end up with zero….. jim

+1...If not, why would smaller bushings create more neck tension, as is verifiable with a seating pressure gauge. This is true with or without a PR that is larger than the bearing surface. The extra pressure is a direct result of the brass springing back.
