What would be the best bullet puller to use on expensive bullets that won't damage the bullet? Hammers are okay but there must be a better way.

I use the RCBS collet puller. Very seldom have to pull bullets. Last Summer I reused a 58 gr VMAX it was about a 1/2" outside the group with my 6BR. I think the damage would be related to how tight you screw the collect on the bullet. I probably have pulled 5 bullets in the last 10 years. Try not to make mistakes so you don't have to pull bullets. My 55-68 gr bullets have very little bearing surface exposed so I have to put more force on the collet than a bullet with a lot of bearing length exposed to grip.

Earplug in the hammer is the only way to not damage your bullet. Simply dropping a bullet on the floor will damage it so you can be sure theres not a collet puller made that doesnt damage them even if you cant see it in your shooting

Bottom line, the Hornady collet is by far the easiest, the safest, the less marring puller I have ever used.
You only have to apply the smallest amount of force on the lever. It does the work. That is the secret to this tool.
Yes you can damage a bullet. But you need only learn how little or much force you need apply and quickly, you will have no issues pulling one round or a hundred rounds.
Don't ask how I know.
I have spread way too much powder around using the hammer style and never liked hammering a live round on a bench in a plastic hammer.

Yes, I actually tried one and it is fast and simple to use but too east to mar the bullet for my liking. I guess if you had many bullets to pull, you would learn the feel of exactly how much pressure to use but I rarely do have that many. In my mind, someone needs to make something like this out of a semi-soft plastic with smooth, rounded edges where it contacts the bullet so it does not have a tendency to scratch the bullet. Id'e be willing to bet that it evolves into something better. It has potential. It is already great for use on pistol rounds for plinking and such but I was hoping it would be better on rifle rounds.

Of course this is just my opinion. They are not terribly expensive. Try one, you may have better feel for it and it may be fine.

like I posted above, I did not have the same luck but I do like it for pistol rounds which are just shot at steels anyway.

The reason I posted the tread is, I had just turned necks on some Lapua 6.5 rounds and it was the first time I had ever done it. Afterwards I saw that there was a fair amount of Imperial wax inside the necks from lubing the arbor. I took a Q-tip and cleaned each of them, resized, ran them through a mandrel die, primed and finished loading. I thought that there would still be residual lube in them but the seating pressure was a little high and inconsistent so I tried dipping the necks in Imperial dry lube, wiped the excess off the outside and seating and they were fine.

After loading eighteen, I noticed inside the neck of one some of the little ceramic beads from the dry lube had stuck to the neck. There was enough wax lube left in it to hold the beads. No way in this world was I going to shoot them down my barrel so I had to pull eighteen bullets. Long story short, I will probably never have to pull that many rounds again but I wished there was an easier way to do it without ruining the bullets.

I think they were fine since I did have foam in the hammer so they will be used for sighters. Just thought Id'e see what you guys use.

Have you tried this on factory's or rounds with a lot of tension?

Grip n Pull, is the best that I have found. It may slightly scuff the bullet, but will not hurt the bullets performance-and it is fast and easy.

The Davidson version is nearly identical. They state that their puller is for soft seated or low neck tension ammunition only.
