What would be the best bullet puller to use on expensive bullets that won't damage the bullet? Hammers are okay but there must be a better way.

I use the Hornady Collet puller. So far, it hasn't damaged the few bullets I've had to pull.

RCBS collet bullet puller is a good one. You do have to buy different collets for every caliber at about $12 though.

I've pulled quite a few with the Hornady collet puller and been impressed with the bullets not being marked at all.

I put foam in the hammer to protect the bullet.

Forster collet puller works well you just have to tighten it down just enough to pull the bullet. If you over tighten you will crush it a bit. Even if it doesn’t look damaged it would still be a good idea to use those for sighters.

Whether or not the bullet is damaged by a collet puller is dependent on the bullet jacket, how tight the neck tension is and how well you set up and use the puller. I have found with handloads that I can always pull the bullets without damage but sometimes Factory loads have so much neck tension that it is impossible to pull the bullets without some damage

Not sure if there is one.

That was what I feared would be the answer. I do pretty good with my inertia (hammer) puller but hoped for something that does the job without the mess but it is not that bad. I do have light seating pressure that is pretty consistently around 40 lbs. I may try a collet type puller. I rarely have to pull a rifle bullet anyway unless I am working up loads and setting the seating depth on a chamber type die.

I needed to pull a couple of bullets not long ago and didn't have a puller. I took a pair of pliers and milled an oval groove in each jaw with a dremel. i was not concerned with damage to the bullets so I put the case in the shell holder with no die in the press, raised the case until the bullet was above the press, grabbed it with the pliers then lowered the case. Easily pulled the bullet with very minimal damage to the jacket. Gonna spray some vinyl on the jaws for future use.

I use the Hornady and the hammer. With the Hornady any damage to the bullet is dictated by the neck tension. No damage with the hammer. I also placed some foam in the hammer capsule and all bullets get zero damage.

RCBS bullet puller with collets. I don't mind if the bullets get a little dent or blemished. Will serve as a sighter or to kill an animal.

The inertial hammer is fine when you need to pull just one or two but if you have to pull a quantity then a collet puller works great

Another vote for RCBS with collets been using for many years..

I’d think that any of the collet style bullet pullers would be fine..

I use the Hornady puller. If you’re careful with how hard you clamp it, you can pull bullets without damage. I do keep the pulled bullets separate ,marked and I shoot them for fun. I gave up the hammer years ago.

I use the Forster collet puller. As mentioned depending on neck tension it can sometimes damage the bullet. When I have expensive bullets to pull, I do appx 75% of the pull with the hammer type and finish off with the Forster one. This way I never damage the bullets, although it is more time consuming.
