bullet holes

Can anyone tell me what most people use to see bullet holes from 600 to 1000 yards? I have never been to a 1000 yard match, what do they use or do to see the groups that far? I'am just getting into shooting at these distances and I am spending a lot of time going back and forth to check groups. Thanks for the help.

Outside of a downrange camera, RADAR, or an accoustic array, I don't think technology exists yet that allows bullet hole viewing at 1000.
I've watched through Leica Big Eyes, which are incredible. But not able to cut through the mirage and see holes in a Std target.

Who knows, There might be something I'm not aware of..

Maybe this is what you meant...

We use 'spotting disks'. These are disks that are stuck into the bullet hole by the target pullers who operate the targets in the pits. You can see a picture of a LR target with a spotting disk on the front page of my website:

For about $350 you can set up a wireless camera/monitor system, my Cannon Powershot, Transmitter & Receiver, a camping 12 volt TV. Run the camera off a lawn tractor battery with an inverter, TV off another. Makes for extra stuff to drag to the range, but well worth it. A friend has his set up for 600 yds. with
radio contol for pan/tilt/zoom so he can have multiple targets.

Taildrag,

Is that setup legit w/o an ARL? Most of the long range options I've priced out either require an ARL, or else involve a bit more $$$ to cover the higher gain antennae on the receiving end, etc. From the sounds of things, the ARL required isn't that huge of a deal... a short multiple guess test for a 'no code' required technician license sufficient to cover ones behind.

More info please...like websites, companies to call, pics of your set up, etc. I have 500+ yards here at the house and want to set up such a system as its difficult to shoot that distance solo!!

I apologise for jumping in on the thread, but I am considering buying a Pentax PF65ED 20 - 60 zoom, for hunting. If I was to use it at a groundhog match do you guys think that I would be able to see 30 cal or 6.5 mm holes in the white at 500 yds or so? Based on the reviews that you gentlemen have done, linked in this thread) I may change my mind and buy the PF80 ED or the new Nikon 25 - 75 x 82ED. They just seem a little too big to be carrying around Idaho or Colorado.
Thanks, Bob

I have a Pentax 80mm ED 20x60, and I can see 22 holes in the white at 500yds on overcast days.

In the sun... ha!, you are on your own with any scope.

Here's some info on where to get a set up like mine, and a few others.

www.central-alarms.com HG-Trans.& Receiver Set #2345ahs good for up to 1000 feet LOS, this can be boosted.

www.avtechsolutions.com Model #VAVS1W24 good up to 1000 m, around $225.00.

www.harrissecurityconsultantincstore.com Item #TT-WAVT700A-2-2-2-3-HSC Transmiter & Receiver, around $150.00.

I have used my set up and my friend 's for pratice out to 1000
yards with no ill effects from the locals complaining about TV problems or the like. I'm gonna try to use my new mini system,1000 feet for a cost of $100) at our local F-Class Matches this year. I'm sure I'll hear complaints there!

All you need is 2 good power supplies, camera, monitor or TV
that is cable ready, and you can see your holes. I even have a 13" TV/VCR combo that I can record with, AUDIO is a plus on the camera.

I tried to find the model #VAVS1W24 at www.avtechsolutions.com and I couldn't find it - has it been discontinued?

These thing look just right for load testing at longer than spotting scope ranges.

Often the target is steel plate. They don't work well on steel plate.

CatShooter,

Try the link again, on the left side of page click on A/V Senders, when that page comes up it should be the third one down. Good luck.

Taildrag,

Very interesting! I looked at some of those packages, and the package set here:

http://www.avtechsolutions.com/vavslr2-kt.htm

...definitely looks to have potential.

I had actually been looking at another direction... taking a high gain antenna like a Super Cantenna attached to a USB wifi adapter w/ external antenna on the local end, and a wifi webcam on the other end. Not being that familiar w/ wifi networking, beyond setting up my local home network), I don't know if I'd need a wifi router and/or another high gain antenna on the far end to make things work.

The dedicated system w/o the networking headaches might be easier. I see avtechsolutions.com has a USB device to enable video capture to a laptop... which could be really fun if you ever want to record a sequence for playback...

Cool!

try http://www.supercircuits.com

They have a 900mhz and 2.4ghz unit they advertise as a 2 mile range. I also suggest using a camera with a zoom lens. That way you can put the camera in a better place for protection and fit the target to your screen. Something like a 3-12mm minimum.

http://www.polarisusa.com has the lenses and also has other stuff as well.

I found for the non-tech type like myself simple is better. My Cannon powershot has zoom and auto focus which is a must, you can use any type camcorder with an output port, some have a lot of zoom so it doesn't have to be on top of the target. Mine is protected with a 1/2 steel plate @ 20 degree angle or so. I like using the TV/VCR combo for recording shots while working up loads. A standard grease pencil works good on the TV screen to mark shots so you don't have to rewind and watch.
