Bullet for 338 WM

I’ve had good luck with 210gr Nosler partitions over IMR 4064, and 210 gr. Barnes TTSX over Accurate 4350. If I could find some 225 gr TTSX’s I’d give them a try.

I have been using 225 grain nosler e tips. Have brought down one elk with them and it was a one shot flop. Which impressed the hell out of me. Full pass through. Did it’s damage inside snd let the blood pour out like crazy.

I forget which brand of 225Gr We used for Hunting w two 338WM's . It will be what you can find these days. I used about 92% of a max charge of IMR4350 & a mag primer. Very potent & effective. Good Luck.

I elk hunted with a Ruger 338 win mag way before i knew how to load my own ammo. My hunting partner and I started to sight in and get used to the rifles almost a year before we went, my first batch of ammo wasn't that accurate. My friend had an FFL and ordered a pretty big batch the next time but it was not exactly the same as the first batch and shoot way better. I had much more confidence in the second bunch of ammo. But after i had an elk on the ground and saw the size of the thing a one inch group at 100yds didn't mean very much at all. The vital size on a full-grown elk must be as big as a beach ball. i am sure that what ever accuracy you have will be good on an elk or moose

I elected to go with Federal factory 250 grain Partition loads for my Alaskan coastal bear hunt on Admiralty Island. They shot more than good enough for that purpose.

However, the first day of strolling around in that dense rainforest timber and seeing claw marks on the trees 12' up, I looked at that 338WM and wondered if it was enough gun.

Alaskan brown bears are magnificent, and scary, animals.

it's proven to be with the right bullet and proper shot placement. Never hunted anything that big or potentially dangerous but prolly bigger is better. All depends if you can stand "bigger" recoil and still shoot accurately.

Have 210, 225, 250PTs and 265ABLRs for my 338. 7RM with 160PT was my 1st choice for elk until I fell into a sweet deal on a 700BDL 338WM with only 4 rounds fired for $300. Took it to central AK on my one year "vacation" courtesy of the USAF and Uncle Sam. 250PTs over 71gn RL-19, Fed215s, WW brass produced 1.23" @ 100yds.

I have no absolutely doubt that the 338 will stop a big bear. In that particular situation I found myself in, "bear guarding" while my brothers worked a small stream for salmon, it was very dense timber and I wondered I could get a good (killing) shot off before the bear was on me. There wouldn't have been much time to react.

I wanted something with a lanyard I think. :)

In the end I think a 338WM with a 225 or 250 gr Nosler Partition at 2600-2700 fps should be pretty good protection.

A good Nosler partition or the A-frame bullet around 230-250 grain will work just fine on any big game animal, around the world. Use the one that is most accurate in your rifle.
