Bullet coating revisited

I read with great interest the recent thread about wet milling bullets with only moly and water. Being contrarian in nature, I prefer to use tungsten disulfide rather than molybdenum disulfide to coat with. I couldn't see why the wet milling wouldn't work the same with the tungsten product so I proceeded using basically the same method. After 2 hrs in the vibratory tumbler the came out looking absolutely beautiful!! Think I'll try the same method using HBn and see what happens.

Phil...I would love to post a pic but am foiled at every turn. This is the only website that I use that makes it difficult to post pics and I know that I'm not the only one. If you want pics I'll be glad to send them to you.

racesnake, you have my interest going strong. I use hbn, but have not tried coating wet, keep us informed. I might be tempted to try it myself rather than wait for your results.

I will try 2 very small batches tomorrow using both water and 91% alcohol mixtures. I will get back to you by weeks end.

This will be good to see, I gsve up on hbn as I was not getting it coated right.
Much easier to coat ws2 from my efforts.

I tried the wet method with HBN. I half covered the bullets with water, added a smiggen of Dawn liquid soap, a little less than 1/4 teaspoon of HBN and viabrated for a couple of hours. No coating whatsoever. I then added a 1/4 teaspoon of moly. An hour later, beautiful looking molly coated bullets.

I am interested on whether the process works with alcohol. Has anyone run that test yet.

I haven't done yet, will attempt today. Will not be able to shoot and report until upcoming weekend or there about.

Dave...what's the reasoning behind adding detergent? Could be that the detergent is lifting the coating as it's being applied.

Let me state that this is a very unscientific test. Initial results, coated 2 batches with hbn/alcohol solution that I treat my barrel with. Ran in vibratory bowl for 2 hrs. Group 1 was bullets and solution only. Group 2 was as group 1 plus had steel bbs included as would be used for coating dry. Visually, Group 2 appeared more like dry coated bullets, group 1 less visual hbn on bullets. Both were examined under 18x lupe. After drying and lightly wiping with cloth, both appeared very close to an untreated bullet. Felt drag across a sheet of paper, those with bbs had the least drag, then group 1, then untreated bullet. Group 2 was similar in feel to dry coated bullets. Using a cotton cloth I got the same results. I have not had a chance to shoot any of these, and will not until at least this weekend. Preliminary, but not certain that it is of benefit to wet coat, except for appearance purposes.

Well, I tried the wet milling method today using HBn. Results: it didn't seem to work. After 2 hr's in the Dillon the bullets came out looking much the same as they did before milling.

Can someone explain how hbn is better than ws2?
Not talking about white fingers!

I have not been able to coat evenly with hbn.
I have been using ws2 for about 1000 rounds in two rifles with positive results.
What can the hbn do that ws2 does not?

I tried HBn for the exact same reason you stated, L-46. It is cleaner to work with. I also had spotty results it. The wet milling has made using ws2 less messy and I will go back to using it. I'm not really sure HBn helped, anyway. I never did see the velocity gains you see with moly and ws2.
