Bullet at +4000 fps

To the gentlemen with your large capacity 22's (22-6mmAI, 22-243, etc.), are these barrel burners? I have a 12T 223AI which I have only been able to achieve +/-3800 fps before running into pressure using 50-52gr bullets, but I will explore the 40's this season.

I have a 22-6mm that was purpose built around 75+ grain bullets (1:8 twist). If I am very careful with it and space my shots way out, it should last 1,000 rounds or so.

How long did the barrel last at those speeds?

Because of barrel life, I settled on 55 grainers with H-414 at 4100 for my standard load. The 40 grain load was more of a test of accuracy & velocity. I sold the gun shortly there after, as I built it way too heavy for a coyote rifle....live and learn.

I run 40grn v-maxs and 40grn nosler bt at 4150 out of my 22-250. Excellent accuracy too. Varget powder btw.

I’ve hit 3600 with a 75 Amax and my 1:9 twist 22-243ai. I’m sure a lighter bullet would easily top 4K.

If using those fast twist big cartridge .224s for shooting varmints or even occasionally long targets, it will take a while to hit the 1000 round mark. If used for competitive work, maybe not so much. Barrels/chambering isn't a pocket book breaker. Many guys build on long barrels and set them back. It saves 350.00

We chronographed a few Nosler 55 grain Ballistic Tips today out of a 6mm Rem at a whisper over 4000 fps. It was 51 grains W760 in FC brass fired by a Fed 210M at 2.825" with a 24" barrel. It was a nice 1/2" group to boot, coyote poison.

284winner, that’s an idea I hadn’t thought about. My thoughts have been wrapped around starting with a straight Remage 24” barrel due to the very light bullets and small amount of powder. I thought with a longer barrel I might start losing velocity. I also figured that if this cartridge fails to meet my goals I could always have it rechambered.

You won't lose velocity with a longer barrel. My 30" barrel is faster than my 28" in same cartridge. You'll lose 2" each time you set it back but won't lose much speed. I'm speaking on a 22-250 size case. Not a 223.

Remember, my cartridge will be just a little larger in capacity than the 221 Fireball and maybe less capacity than the 222 Rem.

The 223 AI using N133 in a zero freebore, 12 or 14T will shoot the 40g Noslers at 4100 in a 26" barrel with bug hole groups.

So, I did a load workup with LT 32 and the Nosler Varmeggedon 40 grain poly tip (I moly) in my 223A 1-14 Kreiger 40x.

As you can see here the top load in this workup was 27.2 and that was going 3875 FPS. You can see NONE of these groups suck!!! I did another load workup and got as high as 28.5 but did not have a chronograph at that session. I never got really really bad pressure and it continued to shoot little groups, certainly good enough for varmint hunting. Getting 28.5 in the case was interesting!!! I am assuming it was over 4000 fps. Will post when I get confirmation.

If you ever pass by any N133, get a pound, the 50's at 3850 are no slouch, add a touch more powder for the 40's for warp speed(4100) with blistering accuracy. No flies on H335 & 2230 either with the 40,50, and 55g.

Bart Sauer said the LT 32 is more consistent so I bought 16 lbs from Bullets.com for $141 for 8 lbs. I do love Vit powders, but I think this new Canadian Accurate 2015/Lt 32 is amazing powder. I wouldn't kick any of them out of bed.

For that price, I would love it! I still shoot the old AA2015, did not mention it because it was so different in burn rate from the Xmr 2015. I have some T32 and should try it.

TAG I just got my 22-6MM AI yesterday. It has a 1-14 twist and will be shooting 50 to 55 gr V max or BT.

AA2200 ain't no slouch in the 223 AI 40g-53g either. 2200 works really well for lighter varmint bullets in smaller case capacity cartridges.

I have not seen anyone mention the 40 gr Bergers. I've had great luck with their 25 and 35 gr bullets in 17 & 20 moving @ the 4000 mark. I'm currently having a 220 Swift built on a 14 twist and plan to see just how fast I can push them.

That bowling ball goes about 16 fps and no fun to throw. I like the 4000 plus fps.

Guys, I've been experiencing a lot of rain here on the east coast and have not been able to get to the range for one reason or another. I have been following this post and I like what I've been reading especially about the 223AI, thanks urbanrifleman, I have some loads made up and hopefully can get out to test them before it get too cold.
