.17 wildcats?

Anyone shooting a .17ppc/ 17 br or .17 tactical out there. What do you think and what kind velcoitys are you getting, thinking something along the lines of 4000 fps and up which the kindler gold 30g bullet the bc of this bullet makes it a very pleasing out to 600 yards at least on paper anyhow.

CRAIGYBOY.
i was thinking at the start of this year about another 17.i have a 17 rem[TIKKA M595 rebarreled LILJA TUBE] this now has a ARCHER NIGHT VISION UNIT on it.i have the option on my f.a.c for another 17.i looked at all the options, 17ppc too much case forming and probably neck turning didnt want that.17 br well why not get a 20br and shoot the hevier bullets.17 tactical will give more or less the same as 20tactical, already have one.
it boiled down to 2 in the end 17mach iv or 17fireball both identical apart from a few thou here and there.when big green decided to put there stamp on the 17miv i thought brass, bullets etc would be readily available[WRONG!!].any way i ordered a 17 remington fb with the HS PRECISION stock, was told by the dealer that he couldnt give me a date for delivery until 2008.so next option- custom wait 18 months no thanks!!.
so ive bought a savage short action the new target model, and have on order a PAC NOR DROP IN SAVAGE barrel ready in dec/jan.stock is probly going to be a duramaxx this rig will hopefully be up and running by jan/feb.dies are on there way from the U.S.A.got my brass, powder, bullets waiting to go.

anyway no more ranting but thats my story about picking another 17.im sure the end will justify the means.

Thanks for the reply Gary. At the minute I am leaning towards a 17 ppc if those 30g kindler bullets will go 4000 fps, which they should easily) they have a bc of .270 thats close to a 20 cal 50g berger and better than any 40g 20cal in a more streamlined bullet.

heres a ballistic sample

17 cal 30g gold bullet at 4000 fps

300 yards drop:5.9"
10 mph wind:7.9"
energy:524 ft lbs

600 yards drop:52.4"
10 mph wind: 37.7"
energy:232 ft lbs

20 cal 40g v-max at 4000 fps

300 yards drop: 5.9"
10 mph wind: 7.7"
energy: 708 ft lbs

600 yards drop:51.7"
10 mph wind drift:36.8"
energey:319 ft lbs.

as you can see there is not much in it and I think the 30g .17cal seems more efficent. It is down on energy compared to the 40g v-max but the crows wont notice that, just fancy a ppc variation myself and I like the laupa brass.

CRAIGYBOY.GO FOR IT!!!
i talked to TODD KINDLER last month to order the dies for my 17fb his exact words to me were "I WISH I COULD SELL YOU SOME OF MY 30 GRAIN KINDLER BULLETS FOR YOUR FIREBALL BUT CANT SEND THEM TO THE UK".if you can get them p.m. me on how to??

Hi Gary, I just assumed the bullets would be easy to get now as sinclair are now able to send match bullets and brass to the uk taht everyone else could but I need to check into it if, I laos remember an article bruce potts done on .17 rem and he had woodchuckden bullets. If not the 30g berger will be the next step.

The 17PPC is very fun to shoot.I have 3 of them,a 6 twist,
a 7 twist and a 10 twist.The 10 is perfect with Todds 30 Gold.
I have had some issues with the 37 Berger in the fast twist rifles.Lets just say the PPC case is plenty for the speed you are looking for, perhaps too much powder room in fact.
If you have a small bolt face rifle I think I'd go with a 17 Tactical,17 Predator or the 17-204.But if you have or can find a used BR gun you could build a nice 17PPC for a fair price.
If it were my turn to do it all over I think I would buy a used bench rifle and an 11 twist barrel from any of our good barrel makers and shoot a 20PPC with any of the nice 39-40 grain bullets we have and I'd even shoot the Berger 50 as well.
I guess it depends what you want the rifle for.Have fun whatever you decide to do.

When doing the final reserch on my 20 the 15 minutes I spent on the phone to Todd Kindler taught me more than several weeks on the web. He is well worth the call, he also does some good UK export deals as I think I may have told you.

I am just a tad unsure on what, if any benifits a 17PPC will bring against the TAC20 already in your box. In my book 17AH would bring noise benifts but a 20AH could also do that with more wallop to boot as a 200 yard rabbit round.,Dont these things get infectious !!)

Interesting project anyway and it does look like a wicked little round.
