building savage target action

i just rolled acrss this forum this last week and there is so much great info that it convinced mt to try to build a 6mm norma BR

a lot of people reccommend savage target action, prefit barrel, lots f brands, and a stock and I am ready to go, right?

well my question is, if I buy a savage target action, with stndard bolt face would i need to change the bolt face or is it already set of for a 6mm round

thinking of shilen barrel and a hs presicion stock

how long is too long in this caliber?

i'm thinking fo going 1:8 because it seems to be more universal, widest range of bullet weights usable)

also should I jump this round, on this frum there are lots of people that say yes and some that say no, what are your reasons?

thanks for any help you can provide
will be a target gun maybe some varmits but i doubt it

If you use the 308 action,22-250, 308,etc) .478 pr .473' or the 'standard short .308 action' it will work great with the 6br.

Howdy !

If your Savage already accepts a case like .308Win, .22-250 Rem,
or .284 WIN...then you're good-to-go w/ a 6BR !

Jump:
My two cents of jumping the bullets....
all my custom accuracy rifles to-date, have shot best w/ the bullet,s) around .002-.003 off the lands. But hey, that's just my rifles w/ the lead/throat my riflesmith gave then.
I've shot all the bullets wts from 80 - 107gr.... all shot best
.002' off the lands.

Barrel:
You did not mention your rifle's intended use ?
My current 6mm wildcat has same case cap as the, new )6 X 47.
For my needs, live varmint out to 1,000, and occasional
groundhog & egg shoots; the 29' gives me godd vel.

Now... if your 6BR is to ba a 'walking varminter'; you'll doubtless want a shorter/lighter barrel.

My rifle has a 29' Broughton 1-8 5-'C' rifled SS barrel; in a Palma taper. I shoot of a front rest and rear bag, or in the field, simply off a single bag.

If you don't intend to shoot 155DACTs or similar wt 6mm bullets,
I'd think the 1-8 should suffice.

Best of luck in your endeavors.

You could do worse, than interface w/ Fed Moreo of ' Sharp Shooter Supply' in Delphos, OH. Fred does all things Savage.
He has barrels, stocks, triggers etc in-stock; and does great metal work. By now, he's made a bizillion 6BR Savages, and should be able to give insight on what woulf ' cook ' for you.

Good post by 357 Mag, so Ill only add a few small items.
With a 1 in 8 twist, you could have a slight problem with some light bullets coming apart right out of the barrel, if you really push them. I also have had them explode when they hit a paper target, plus the free bore may be to long to get to the lands with some light bullets, like less than 60g.
And unless your out for 'all out accuracy', you dont need any Smith's help,,and they may not help at all) you can install the barrel yourself, and a Rifle-Basic trigger, I do. That's one reason Savages are so common.
All that said about a 1 in 8 twist, and Im waiting on a 1 in 8 barrel now myself, and that's what all mine are.
And I like the bullets to touch or even .010 into the lands, and try Varget.
My favorite is an 80g Berger over 30.5g of Varget, for less than 500 yds.
Your mileage may differ.

it will mainly be for target shooting

and the occasion lazy varmit hunting from the back of my truck

thanks for the great info

however i already have a savage 308. an older model 12, back form when they first started with the accutriger. small shank

i was wondering if I should just convert, or if I should start fresh with a target action, is it that much better?
,take into account I have a lot of money in the 308 as loading equipment, brass, bullets ect)

what would be one step down in scope quality from nightforce. They are just a little to spendy for me to justify.

Im using an older Mod 12, with a 6MM RB 26' Pac-Nor 1/8', and its shooting in the .1 and .2s at 100.
One step down would most likely be a top of there line Leopold, and mine cost $900. five years ago, and is now $1200. with there military ranging reticle, that is great. This is on my H-S 2000 HTR in 308.

Since you already have the model 12, I'd start with that for your purposes. I have a 6BRX Krieger on a model 12 single shot, and a 7WSM shilen on a model 12 single shot, and I also have the new target action with an FT/R .308. I don't think there is that much difference between them for what you need. There is a guy on this forum shooting a savage model 10 repeater action with a 6BRX barrel and it is an amazing shooter from the posts I have read.,The 6BRX is just an improved 6BR for your info.)

Changing the barrels is pretty easy when you get the hang of it and have the right tools so you don't end up screaming at the gorilla that puts the barrel nuts on at the savage factory.

Have fun.

Installing the barrel on a Savage is easy, you do need a nut wrench about $30. and a set of wood barrel blocks, you could make them) and a good vice. It took me the first time, about 20 min to get the barrel on and the head space set to my preped brass.
And Im doing a 22 BR now, on an other Savage 12, the barrel is ready to ship, Rifle-Basics Sav 2 trigger, and a 308 bolt head, and I go from a 223 to a 22 BR. That's the beauty of Savages.
Mike.
