Building new reloading room in basement: Update 2/23

Realized I need to edit my post but won't since it was quoted. Should have been "I wound not do recessed (can) lighting unless..."

I put a long LED Shop light over my bench. I have two more but have not decided where to put them. I used 2x10's for the bench.I should have moved the moving blanket out of the picture...lol.. I just finished this a few days ago.

Anyone know if led lights interfere with scales. Have heard they interfere with ham radios fm am radios and some tvs but not sure if they affect scales like fx120

I use all led lights and haven’t had any issues with my FX scale. I have seen led lights affect over the air tv, am and fm radio signals.

Most lights you'll find are either warm (yellow) or blue (daylight). I strongly prefer lights with a color temperature 3700-4000K, often called bright white or neutral white. Daylight lights are too harsh, especially in a white room, and yellow lights mess with color perception. You'll find that you'll ned fewer watts of 4K light to see well. I definitely recommend LED lights for their efficiency, and they won't interfere with electronics because they don't have ballasts. I now replace my compact fluorescents with LEDs as they fail. Most CFLs take some time to come up to full output, but LEDs are instant on which I really appreciate in areas that I use briefly.

good thread, thanks to all for sharing. I will also be relocating shortly and you guys are giving me some good ideas. Count me as 1 more for never seeing the LED cause scale drift

I had a 30'x30' shop build with 12' ceilings. I wanted to be SURE I had adequate lighting compared to my old "dungeon". I had twelve 6o w. equivalent recessed LED can lights installed. I didn't like the light output and changed them out with 75 w. - then 120 W. Finally - I put up a few of the 4' LED shop lights above my bench in addition. Lesson learned is to go with much more light than you think you could ever use. A dimmer will take it down if you get dimmable fixtures. By the way - for you guys who have the fluorescent tube shop lights - you would really like the new LED shop lights being sold! Way more light and no more tube changeouts and hassle discarding them. Amazon has 8-packs reasonably priced.

I don't know about anyone else but I'm impressed. I've got a RCBS green monster that came with 9mm and .45 ACP dies. I used it for a bit and it made good ammo. It's a bear to pull that handle and keep it smooth. Thanks for sharing.

I reload in a corner of a bedroom. My house is slab foundation so I’d give a lot for a solid basement reloading space.

How much space depends on how many calibers, presses, and other tools you need. So weigh the responses according to your gear.

I like task lighting. Magnetic base sewing machine lights are really helpful to me and cheap.

I bought four of these from Lowes. They are rated at 5000 lumens each. I put them on a dimmer switch and rarely have them at full power (since I don't keep sunglasses in the room)DSCN5316.JPG DSCN5314.JPG

I was contemplating finishing the walls like that or atleast and accent wall. That's very nice.

I spent a good hour last night playing around with these slim recessed lights (cans) I noticed that if I put them 20" apart there's not much difference than 40" apart so I plan on trying a third within a 5' span. They were on special for $45 for a 6 pack. Though I do like the idea of a 5000 lumen light overhead

Its actually a Ponsness Warren Metallic II (Serial number in the 400's). Its the only machine I've known loading all my pistol, LR, and Hunting ammo on., I have a Pacific O Press and a RC'er+Piggyback I've had for years and never mounted

I had a Metallic II years ago. Great machine; loaded thousands of .308 and .30-06 on it for my Garand and M1a's. Sold it to a friend of mine, and he still uses it over 30 years later. PW makes good stuff!

I like all the lighting ideas posted, but the one I always go back to for my self is an adjustable magnifying glass with surrounding light.
As I get older, the magnifying glass is a bit help especially for the writing on case heads and the ability to put a little more light exactly where I am working on the bench is a big plus.

Looking at your pictures, your basement may be dry now, but those stains at the bottom of the walls looks like previous water problems to me. Once you have the walls closed up, you will never know if you have mold growing back there and that is not good for a baby in the house or you either. I would do a little more investigating if I were you.

Good luck.

Good point on the mold. I've lived here for 6 years and have never had any moisture in the basement and in which time we've had 2 tornados and some pretty sever down pours. I own another building down the street and that regularly gets water... Needless to say I would and have erred on the side of caution and had everything tested 6 years ago and about 6 months ago when I started to plan this out.

I truly appreciate the concern for my family's health but I really am just looking for lighting tips and whether or not someone would recommend can lighting vs the new led LED strip lighting
