Building a top notch 30BR

Hi All, I'm new in Benchrest shooting and reloading. just started about 2 months ago and already hooked.
I've been reading lots of good things with 30BR where you get good acturacy and don't have to fuss with it too much as with 6BR or 6ppc, while have long barrel life. So I've decided on getting myself one. I know a rifle with this kind of precision will probably run me into 3k. ouch! but accuracy cost money....

So if you have any comments or idea of configuration, barrel, twist rate 1:17, 1:18, type of action and stock etc. please feel free to comment. any input will be greatly appreciated... also post the current top winning competition configuration if availble.

I don't mean to hijack your thread but the 6PPC and 6BR are two of the easiest cartridges to load for, especially the PPC. Just fill the case with the right powder and seat a match bullet in a Lapua case and they will almost shoot all by themselves if you don't get in the way.

Following on Cheechako's post, you need to remember, with the 30BR you have to expand the necks, turn the necks,at least enough to remove the bulge formed from necking-up), and many guys like to anneal after doing that. The Bullets,BIBs and Cheeks) are superb, but to get maximum performance you need a really good chamber, using a match reamer handled by a BR-quality smith.

With a 6BR, a great chamber is equally important, but you can really just take brass right out of the box, chamfer the mouth, then load and shoot. Plus there is the factory-loaded ammo option for the 6BR.

I'm not meaning to dissuade you from a 30BR--it offers amazing accuracy and phenomenal barrel life. But it is more work.

I assume you've read the 30BR Cartridge Guide,link above). It covers many of your questions about twist rate, powder/bullet selection, and barrel choice. You won't go wrong with BIBs, 1:15 - 1:17, a BAT, Borden, Stiller, or Kelbly action, and a good custom barrel.

It's easy, and you don't need to spend $3K. Many excellent used guns are for sale, and many have 308 boltfaces, for around $1500 to $1800. I would suggest a HV, but not required. It will already have the stock work and trigger in place. From that point, all you need is a barrel done. I'm not getting into the "best barrel" thing, cause most all of em will shoot well. 17 or 18 twist will do fine. Most reamers are of the match configuration. As stated, there is brass prep to be done, or you can buy preped brass from Ron Hoehn.
