BUILDING A HUNTING RIG CONSIDER THIS

This should have been obvious, but I still learned it the hard way… Don’t load your hunting ammo into the lands as far as you may your benchrest loads. Likewise don’t compress the powder as much. I had one stick in the rifling trying to extract a live round. That’s no fun in the field. A few tenths less powder and just kissing the lands & no issues since.

With respect to choosing a hunting cartridge, when I was much younger, I would go through this type of analysis anguishing over which is better, that cartridge versus this cartridge, etc. I would pour over ballistics tables studying velocity and energy data.

This is all fun and creates spirited debates. However, after 50+ years of shooting and hunting I discovered that it really doesn't matter which cartridge you choose as long as it's appropriate for the type of game you are going to hunt - they all work quite well. The real difference maker is the person behind the rifle.

Your an influencer, Bill. Seems everytime I pick up a box in the shop, “thats Bill’s”, “oh, that’s Bill’s”, “Zack, did we send Bill his package?” Yup, that’s another one….
When are you going to start handing out shooting lessons?
WOW! Thanks for the confidence Bro. Sounds like I have a lot of stuff getting ready to happen once again. I get just as excited over the next project coming from ODCR as I did the very first build. Must be because I know what I'm about to open looks and shoots as good as the first one.

Hold your horses ol’ buddy, I didn’t say I OPENED anything!! Hahaha :D
Im just saying that if there isn’t something in the shop currently with your name on it, something’s wrong and I need to make sure your ok!
Zack’s reputation is well earned, believe me. But everyone who knows you on this board should know not to make any friendly wagers when it comes to shooting against you. When I finish putting this light gun together, I’ll have to come down and get you to teach me a thing or two. I’ll take ya out to lunch at that oceanside restaurant we talked about.

UR absolutely correct on finding no book data. It's a wildcat cartridge. I can get close to 3200 fps with a 118 in a 30x46 (my 30BR reamer run in to depth). If it were a SAAMI cartridge those loads and velocities would never be published imo. Too many lawyers hunkered down ready to pounce.
It seems fair to compare 30BR loads with FTR and Palma 308 loads.

Yea, it appears all the manuf. load data is more on the conservative side than what we used to see in them.

Industry max pressures are probably at least 10k psi less than what what they're being run at for competition :D. That's the way it's always been with wildcats. When they're out in the wild and running at 70k psi the numbers are fantastic. When they're pressure tested and throttled down to 55k psi or whatever they find their place in line with everything else.

If one reads far enough through the description you'll find, "a cartridge in search of a niche"! o_O THE niche, of course, Was, AND IS, competitive bench-rest shooting!!:p They never did, "get it"! ;)

Of course, anything the 30BR does beyond BR competition, is simply just more good stuff . . . RG

P.S. We've been using the homeless wonder cartridge in registered bench-rest tournaments for almost a quarter century already . . . "and now we're growin' old" . . . Thank you, Ronnie Long!

@RGRobinett

Randy,

Is the reamer that Shilen uses able to 'check all the boxes?'

Am thinking about this one as I have a metric ton of 30 cal bullets and not particularly fond of the 308 for bench work.....

Thanks.

Rich

I would not pick the 30BR or even the 30x47 over the standard .308 Win for a hunting rifle. JMO. Nosler load data shows a bit over 3200 fps muzzle with a 125 gr ballistic tip bullet. My concern with that bullet and velocity would be meat damage if I was shooting in the 100-150 yd range or closer.

Yeah those bullets don't need a lot of velocity. I've used the 7mm 120gr Ballistic Tips at a whopping 2400 fps from a 7-30 Waters and they performed perfectly. The 308 125gr BT is a popular handgun hunting bullet for the same reason
