building a heavy gun for Williamsport

my buddy has started to get parts together for building a heavy gun for 1000yd competition. so far he has the action and is ready to order a barrel in 1.450 dia, 9 twist 32 or 33" long and going to shoot the 230 gr bullet. so far he has in mind the Krieger, Brux and Bartlien barrels, he will be looking for a gunsmith to chamber and thread for the action. any suggestions on gunsmiths in the northeast PA area. any comments on the barrels brand and specs so far. also it is going to be built on a barrel block.

thanks

You live in the land of custom rifle gun smiths. King, Bordon, Hammond just to name a few. He could drop over the line into New Jersey and go to Bob White at The Shooters Corner too.

I am sure some of the Heavy Gun Shooters from Williamsport will chime in here. Joe Salt etc.

I have a very nice HG that I am looking to part with. Stock, aluminum made by Rick Piceretta, 1.450 Obermyer barrel, 700 REM action blue printed by Rick, 12-42 NF, chambered in .300WSM by Mark King and also glued into the aluminum block by Mark King. Front rest is a Sinclair and rear is a Bear. If interested PM me.

Mark King, for a Heavy Gun 300 WSM. I wouldn't shoot the 230 grain but the 215 Hybrid or 210 VLD. I personally like Kreiger for the ones you listed. I would do a 30 inch. The barrel block would be a glue in and not a clamp block. It would also be a 10 twist. Matt

I took on nearly the same project. I have a Savage 06 holding a Barlein 28" straight taper with 1.003 at the muzzle and 5r rifling 11-10 gain twist Match Grade barrel pushing 173gr. Match Grade Hornady ELD's loaded at 50grns. of IMR 4064 setting in an MDT Chassis System; laying 3 group rnds just outside a 1/4" at a 100yrds.
That's not saying much I know. I don't shoot "F" class or anything like that; I simply shoot paper. What I did was take my stock and trigger assembly off and sent Bartlein the barrel and action and bolt assembly still together and they did all the work for me. I figured they knew more that most and I wouldn't have to hunt for someone to do it and sit in wonder about if I could trust someone to do it right the first time.
All I have to do now to get it any better than a 1/4" Is cut my powder back and watch my pattern to see if it gets smaller and then when that gets smaller or bigger I'll know where to go from there or leave it alone.
Hope this helps some. Just sharing my thoughts

Thanks and good fortune to you
